My take is the opposite. Hart like Willard would be the road seldom traveled, but there is a good story to be found with each man. I think Pollack either got busy with his legal career or soured on boxing due to a near tragedy that's personal to him that involves boxing. Hence the long break.
A 20 round bout certainly increases Willards output as well. But I think overall, the duration favors Johnsons strengths more than Willards. And I think it would've had a big difference in Johnsons favor.
I posted quite a few of the rounds from 11-20 in another thread. Rounds, 12, 14, 15, 17-21. You could argue Willard won more of the round here, and if it was 20 round fight, he would get to work sooner. Willard was somewhat inactive in rounds 1-10. His strategy I suppose.
I personally hope that he changes his mind and writes a biography of Willard. I think that is a Willard major black spot in our understanding of the heavyweight lineage, and that a good biographer would certainly mix things up a lot!
How many books did he really sell? Willard is a historic figure, between Johnson and Dempsey, who can sell plenty of books. I'd put the KO over Johnson on one side of the front page, and a photo Dempsey pasting Willard on the other, with the backdrop of the white hope era contenders, and Willard in cowboy gear. That might sell.
It's possible. Jess did win the real fight. So I guess assuming a Johnson victory is always going to be a bigger leap of faith.
It wouldn't do any more than Hart, whoever you put on the cover. It'd be a book for hardcore weirdos like us, and I reckon that only a very small sampling of the people who post here who would read it.
Any idea on those numbers? Or any of his books? Would be interesting to know if he's ever shared that information.
If he leveraged the developed digital landscape, he might be able to sell more books than before. I would definitely be down to showcase the book in one of my videos. I bet Roots of Fight would do some really quality clothing and promotion since they have a true passion to the sport. Social Media is becoming a strong presence for these communities, with tons of reach. He could also do direct sales deals with libraries, book stores, vendors, etc. But I don't really know that side of it. I've never sold a book so I don't know the nuances of the market, I'm just thinking out loud. A big Jess Willard wave with quality content would be pretty exciting.
