There are THOUSANDS of substances that enhance your performance that athletes can LEGALLY use, some become apart of the WADA watch list and inevitably get banned, some get reinstated as a legal supplement due to insufficient evidence meriting its ban. Meldonium was one of many legal performance enhancing supplements around, but the WADA banned it, despite the lack of evidence that it is any more effective than other legal supplements, which is why it took more than 30 years to ban it. The WADA ban of the substance had more to do with politics, due to the geopolitical tensions the United States has with Russia, more Russian athletes were using this drug, hence it was a good time to ban it. Do not be surprised if it gets reinstated back in to legal market.
I think almost all pro athletes use the juice in this day and age. The incentive is just too much. It's only the athletes with connections that can get away with testing positive and nothing being done about it. Brings to mind the Lance Armstrong incident. One of his fellow competitors stated that Lance used and Lance set out to destroy the guy, which he did, and then it turns out Lance was full of ..it! I hope the morality clause it his contract causes him to lose it all! I think its common for boxers to use the juice and then cycle off when the testing starts for the big bout. Coward is the wrong word, I'd be inclined to call them realistic when using the roids. And back to Povetkin, I have read that the testing agency that found the positive result recommended that the fight still happen as the levels found were almost insignificant. I'm not surprised about the delay no matter how it happened. That's just typical promotion these days. It seems that there is always a delay in the lead up to a big fight. I've grown tired of the formula frankly, and try not to get up for a fight until the last week before. Tired of being treated like a yo yo.
Pot is on the list and many controversial drugs not universally considered to be performance enhancers, including what Povetkin was found with trace amounts of.
PEDvetkin felt he needed very advantage possible, so it is right for folks to question his fortitude.
There was a lot of evidence that Meldonium was being abuses by athletes. They monitored the drug for a year and diagnosed many cases where Meldonium wasn't needed by the athlete and they still used it. They checked performances, times, the number of athletes who had it in their system and decided that it enhances your performance.
Well, Povetkin has been involved in four purse bids in his career ... and he's managed to personally cause the cancellation of three of the four fights. He went to purse bids three times against Wlad. The first two times he pulled out on short notice. The first time he claimed he twisted his ankle. The second time they got backed into a corner, his trainer Teddy Atlas just admitted they didn't think he'd win, so they called it off. And not to be crass, but the third time, the money was so huge to fight Wlad, that if Povetkin pulled out he'd probably have been found on a train platform like Denis Boytsov was. So he showed up and got beaten to a pulp by Wlad, instead. And now, in his fourth purse bid, he's gotten caught cheating, forcing the cancellation of the fight on a week's notice. This after pushing the Wilder fight back as far as he could, and twice passing on dates because he claimed he needed a tuneup or needed more time (to clear all the PEDs from him system, apparently). So, if he's not a coward, he's pretty damn close. The first two times he pulled out against Wlad he was the IBF mandatory. The third time (when he actually showed up) he was the WBA mando. Now he's screwed the WBC. I don't know who will make him a mandatory again. Yesterday, the WBO announced it was dropping Povetkin from number-three to out of its top 10. So they don't seem to want to make the same mistake the other organizations did. There's too much that goes into putting on these events to have a guy just consistently ruin things at the last minute.
Clearly not. A coward is someone that shows fear and as a consequence ducks fights and quits in the ring. Povetkin has done none of that. Are RJJ or James Toney or Evan Field cowards? They got busted for steroids
He's gotten himself out of three of four fights that went to purse bids. (Once falsely claiming a twisted ankle, another flat out admitting he couldn't win. And this time taking drugs he knew were banned.) That's the definition of showing fear and ducking fights. :deal Faking an injury. Taking drugs you know will get you banned. And just flat out pulling out of a fight claiming you can't win. That about covers every possible scenario, doesn't it?
Your version of the timeline is partially correct. The first pullout with Wlad was because of Sauerland, the 2nd time indeed was on Atlas, the 3rd time he was wasn't backed into a corner at all, Sauerland and K2 were at each other as usual bickering over german TV and whatnot, and Povetkin had his Russian backers to guarantee him his shot on home turf. It was a smart move not to take Wlad's offer. I'd hardly call the 4th bid his fault for being pushed back so far, his "tune ups" were based on Wilder being granted 3 voluntaries. Was he supposed to sit and make no money until the WBC finally pushed Wilder into the purse bid? I think not.
The WBO is the only organization that hasn't named Povetkin a mandatory and demanded their champ fight him. And the WBO dumped Povetkin from their ratings yesterday. (He was at #3.) These orgs give boxers a lot of leeway most of time. Povetkin's burned about all his bridges at this point. Based on his track record, Povetkin will probably end up fighting Chagaev-Oquendo for the WBA regular belt. That's about all that's left for him. That's the path he took last time. And that's about the level he's comfortable with.
The first wasn't because of Sauerland. He claimed he twisted his ankle tripping over a tree stump. (Which was never backed up.) And Wilder was given THREE voluntaries because Povektin turned down the September fight and the January fight. Wilder offered him a fight in September last year, in January this year and in April ... but Povetkin's team pushed it back to May (which is the farthest they could push it without requesting a delay ... and he still tested positive). You guys were so busy insisting Wilder didn't want the fight, and making jokes about Sconiers, you ignored the fact that Povetkin was the one pushing the fight back. (Which some of us kept pointing out to you.) I'm not going to argue this. Everything I said was true. The orgs see it, too. Which is why the WBO dumped Povetkin yesterday and the IBF doesn't rate him at all (after he screwed them twice). We'll see what the WBC does. But I doubt they are going to happily make him their mandatory ever again. Povetkin is running out of sanctioning bodies, because every time someone sticks their neck out for him and makes him a mandatory... he screws them over by getting the fight called off. I don't know how many times you guys have to be hit over the head with this before you wake up.
Well, i get where you comin from when you say RJJ is a coward, but James Toney? I'm sad you think he is :nono
