Entertaining I think so - one of the best ever? I don’t think so, I don’t think many people think that and if they did then you could call him overrated.

I think he was another world champion and like most he was elite and he lost like the rest because it’s just the way it is - sometimes.

 

His net worth today is 33 million. I think that puts him ahead of any of his contemporaries except Lewis.

 

If you look at a list of the richest living boxers, you will find British fighters are over represented.

 

Twenty years out, you could 5x your networth or blow it depending on outside the ring choices.

Professor, with all due respect, what are you talking about? You say once he started to face better fighters that wasn't enough. Which fighters are you talking about?

Is it Manuel Medina, Tom Johnson, Wilfredo Vazquez, Kevin Kelley, Paul Ingle and Vuyani Bungu, all of whom Hamed knocked out, or is it Wayne McCollough and Cesar Soto, both who were decisioned easily by Hamed.

I was not a fan of the guy. Hamed was arrogant, pompous and eminently unlikeable but other than losing to Hall of Famer Barrera, 8 rounds to 4, Hamed was a successful, high quality boxer.

 

He's rated properly by pretty much everyone. Animalistic puncher with some of the worst technique ever

 

Lets give it some perspective.

He has more money today than Larry Holmes, and he is one of the fifteen richest boxers in the world, of who six are British.

 

I was a big Naz fan back in the day, so I'll try to be as impartial as possible...
I actually feel he's both underrated AND overrated. My sense is that he was a stylistically awkward, terrific puncher who, like him or not, had real star quality. I actually think he was, at one point, very, very good, probably peaking in around '94 - '96 when he seemed to perfectly blend reflexes with his unorthodox style.
A lack of dedication to training, becoming overly reliant on power, fall-outs with his trainer and hand problems all contributed to a fairly steep decline - added to that the excellent technique of MAB.
Barrera beat him. But he had to work for it. And Naz was a fairly heavy favourite going into that one, from memory. But, realistically, the warning signs had been there for his last few fights. I think he was declining by that point.
But Hamed still beat some very good fighters along the way - McCullough, Kelly, Medina, Johnson. And he did so fairly easily.
Ultimately I view him as a bit of a shooting star who shone brightly for a few years but then fizzled out. I'm not saying for a moment he was the best featherweight of all time. And I do think the elites of that era would probably have been too much for him (Marquez, Morales, Pac-man). But I do think he tends to get underrated because of the nature of his first - and only - loss. And his boasts which he failed to live up to. Plus some of his later, not great performances. But, at his best, he was a real handful for anyone.

 

Let's be honest, Hamed technique wise looked like he had never spent a day in a ring in his entire life. Thank God for him he had the power of a greek god

 

I never said he wasn't very good. I liked Hamed. He was a monster. The thread is "was he underrated" and no...............I don't think he was. Everyone acknowledged his gun slinger ability. He absolutely lacked "craft"............and there's no argument to disprove that, we all saw him multiple times. You seem hung up on me not liking the aesthetics of the man..........welp
