Since scoring a four-round unanimous decision over Sammy Yniguez in his professional debut on the Andre Ward-Rubin Williams undercard in March of 2008, I had high hopes for super bantamweight Rico “Suavecito” Ramos [18-0, 10 KOs] of Pico Rivera, California.
In that off-television bout in San Jose, Ramos outworked his opponent like he was an established veteran. He mixed his punches up well and had very advanced footwork for having just celebrated his 21st birthday.
Rico Ramos was a very good amateur, winning the 2007 National PAL championship before falling just short of making the Olympic team for Beijing.
Ramos would fight seven more times that year, going 7-0 with five knockouts having signed with southern California based promoters Goossen-Tutor Promotions and providing him with plenty of dates as well as tests to help move him along nicely.
