Is Riddick Bowe an ATG Heavyweight? If he's not ,neither is Vitali.

Bowe is comfortably in my top20, Vitali is not.

Bowe achieved more, against superior oppponents & looks better on film. Vitali was more consistent & had a much longer career but I cant see how you can rank him higher than Bowe.

 

Good post, agree with all points. Discipline, commitment and will-power can go a long way.

 

I'll make some arguments for Vitali but I'm not necessarily saying he ranks higher because of these;

• Bowe ducked Lewis. Ducking isn't a very great thing to do, is it?
• Vitali has never been beaten the way Golota beat Bowe those times
• Vitali came back from 4 years retirement to easily beat a belt holder who had only lost to the best fighter of the era up until that point
• A big part of Vitali's legacy is his 10 defences of the WBC belt he won when he was obviously past prime, and arguably shot by the end of the reign
• During that 11 fight winning streak Vitali never came close to losing a fight and beat all of his opponents pretty easily

Those are facts.

Both are cheaters (roids, and blinding Clay)
Both connections with the mob (Liston speaks for himself, Vitali is in the government)
Both lost to the first good competition they ever faced. (Byrd and Ali)
Both quit because their shoulders hurt because they couldn't hit a blown up lhw (Byrd, Ali was lhw at the olympics)
