One for the boxing purists, can only seem to fight one way though, counter puncher. He is deadly though, just one punch against ****ens.
Amagasa was a brutal fight and Jezza did not last more than 2 rounds He may have few more fights left considering he don't get hit often.
I don't know that I'd call the people who love that super defensive style purists, since I think the purest form of boxing is the super aggressive style of Roberto Duran or Mike Tyson. And a lot of the time you'll see the same people who like that defensive style hating on great aggressive style boxers like Pacquiao or Golovkin. There ought to be some other word for people who prefer chess matches to slugfests, you know like chess enthusiasts.
He definitely has more fights left, I'm not saying he's shot I'm just saying that at 35 he's not in his prime anymore, he's slightly past it and it's noticeable.
I like watching Rigo and I do appreciate fighters like Mayweather but at the same time people often go overboard with the whole "Oh you don't understand just how good he is...", "need to know boxing to appreciate his style". I mean it's true to a certain extent and if you JUST like guys like Pacquiao you'll never enjoy watching Rigo, but Rigo's had some genuine absolute stinkers which no one in their right mind would find enjoyable to watch, purist or not. Agbeko, Francisco and Addy fights spring to mind.
True, which is why part of his current situation is his own doing. It's frustrating to me because he has the ability to fight in a more entertaining style. Not like he'd have to turn in to Gatti to do it.
I think he's amazing but I did find his Francisco fight boring, to be honest. Haven't seen his last one yet and I've enjoyed his other fights. Otherworldly talent and underrated due to his excitement level, or lack of.
Great fighter. Ducked one of the greatest fights ever: Rigondeaux vs Lomachenko after originally agreeing to move up to 126lbs and agreeing to the split. Despite this, I'd understand why he wouldn't want to be at a weight disadvantage. They're both on a similar tier, so giving up something like weight could be a deciding factor. Loma would beat Rigo unanimously, though.
I like Rigo. Amazing talent. But, he is the type of fighter that needs to be matched with top competition all the time to be exciting to watch, for everyone. This whole argument about him fighting in a more fan friendly style is unfair. People fight how they fight...period. You can't really blame a guy who knows how, and has the skill, to not to get hit, to not want to be hit for other's enjoyment. It would be counterintuitive to engage in slugfests when it's unnecessary. On the other hand, you do have to hit your opponent enough times to be effective. Rigo does just enough of that...no more or less than what is needed. And it looks beautiful...against a highly skilled fighter. But, against a bum, it looks like he is not trying. Yeah good point man, against a bum Rigondeaux gives him a few counters and they just become too scared to throw anything and nothing else happens in the fight. A better fighter would still at least try to make something happen and give Rigo more opportunities to capitalize on.
That's because, against bums, he really doesn't try. I think you nailed it in that he does just enough, and has no problem holding his A-game back if he doesn't think the opponent is worthy of it. Other immensely talented, more popular fighters have done the same thing (Floyd, Wlad), but they didn't always fight that way. Both Floyd and Wlad had been in entertaining s****s where they took more risks prior boxing conservatively. What hurts Rigo is that U.S. fans rarely got to see the entertaining fights during the post-Donaire- it seemed like his entertaining fights weren't on HBO, and the ones that were on HBO, were the snoozers. Fans get frustrated at the promise of skills they don't get to see on fight night. It's much easier to get a pass for those conservative master classes when you've already got a fan base, but it's much more difficult to build a fanbase off of them, particularly for a little guy.
