The idea that he truns pro obviously makes me feel euphoric, but I think there is a chance he could be one of the biggest let-downs/dissapointments ever. I am not pessimistic, just realistic. His advanced (boxing) age and his somewhat inactivity makes me worry a bit. Let's look at what happened to Barthelemy for example: Yan looked tremendous in the Olympic games. He was insanely good and almost untouchable. He was never a big puncher, but was phenomenal and boxed almost everybody's ears off. I know that his lack of power might've been an additional reason for being unsuccesful in the pro's, but I think his age caught up with him too. And I think that with Rigondeaux this could be the case as well. Still, I see Guillermo easily crushing trough his first 10/15 opponents and his experience and talent should bring him very far. Peace!
I wouldn't think so. He hasn't had the wear and tear of fighting in the pro's so his body should still be in top physical condition. Also, he's reaching his physical prime as a man soon.
He could be too old to start fighting 12 rounders. Many cubans have that problem (see RJJ's commentary in Diosbelys Hurtado vs Kostya Tszyu).
He's no teenager, but with the two gold medals and experience level, he should get in position in no time. Remember, that he's regarded as one of the top fighters out there, amateur or pro, so it should take no more than a year for something big, if he lives up to his potential as a pro as well. 5 years of memorable pro action, I predict that. So he might be too old to do a De La Hoya or Pacquiao type of complete pro career, but with the two Olympic golds, he's already outdone some major talents of the past decade - and now he should be a 3-time gold medallist. One thing is for sure: a perfect 12 month is needed for him. 100% focus and dedication for boxing, excellent management and opponent selection, exactly the kind of quality fighter who will develop him to the higher levels and exciting fights to get the TVs and fans attention. And that's not easy.
His window is smaller than someone starting out in the 18-22 range, but with his talent he should finish his career with at least one world tittle.
He might get moved at Gamboa speed... Because of his age, and at that weight it seems that you can get old a little quicker at lower weights, he's gonna be moved fast... But because of his amateur background, it should be no problem.... Speaking of Yans, he just scored his first stoppage victory of his pro career....
