I've heard lots of sories over the years that Roy Jones Jr. is a steroid fuelled fake... is this true or are the rumours false?
he failed one test for testosterone in a fight. about 10-12 years ago I think. the guy he was fighting tested positive for it to. It was later removed from his record. when he re-tested neg. and he has always denied he did.
cheers dude :good i'm a fan of RJJ's undeniable skills too... but the question of roids enhancing his performance etc. will surely tarnish his legacy once he hangs up his gloves? there doesn't seem to be a definate answer either way... just question marks :?
On the only occasion the drug test results were sent to the state boxing authority rather than the sanctioning body he is known to have failed for steroids. This somehow got translated to a nasal decongestant in press releases but the state doctor involved has since gone on record confirming it was steroids. He supposedly put on nearly 20lb of muscle in six month between the Woods and Ruiz fights. That screams steroids. 5lb of muscle per year is realistically the max for someone concentrating on weights as opposed to endurance needed for boxing. He suddenly became mortal and looked noticeable less sharp in his first fight after after the balco storm brewed up. Again, alarm bells should be ringing. Frankly he would have been great at middle and supermiddle with or without em, but I strongly suspect his performances above 168 are largely the result of performance enhancers.
I remember that; someone asked him how many curls he did to get arms that big, and his reply was that he didn't lift, he just got big from hitting the heavy bag. My guess is "the heavy bag" is probably what he called the gym bag that held his stash. Seriously though, I agree with you about not really caring about it in boxing...it might diminish some things in some people's eyes, but I don't hold it against those who are busted that much since I think more people do it than get caught. MMA's a cess pool of it. Before the inevitable post saying everyone's innocent, I offer up no hard evidence for this- it's just my two cents on it. It's pretty naive to think a shitload of people would use steroids and HGH to play baseball, but nobody would in a sport where your living is based on beating up your opponent.
will the steroids, if used, just have helped him gain weight or improve his all round performance? (i.e speed, recovery between rounds etc.?)
Steroids improve lean muscle mass, power (ie both strength and speed) and recovery between training sessions. It will improve recovery between rounds as improving recovery between training seesions allows for more intensive training and therefore a fitter fighter.
I agree.... The fight for which he tested positive that later slid under the rug was the Richard Hall fight. They both tested positive. Yeah, their excuse was supposedly a nasal decongestant...though I believe Roy claimed all he took was "Ripped Fuel" which doesn't contain any anabolic substances. Although I am a fan of Roy, I have to put my logic together and look at the facts Roy looking so bad and lethargic right after Balco got busted (that goes for Mosley too which Mosley was linked to Balco). And also he never really got his physique back after that whole situation. I personally don't buy the "got old" in one fight. I watched the story of Roy Jones vs John Ruiz documentary on ESPN and to me, which I have seen guys on juice before, Roy certainly looked "juiced" when he bulked up to fight Ruiz....He had that bloated look.
i agree with what you say with regards to chin, mental strength and skill... but if jones was juiced up going into a fight against a fighter he knew wasn't taking substances, surely this would have given him a mental edge as well as physical? as i said earlier RJJ's skills and shot choice are his main attributes and roids doesn't improve those... but knowing you have a physical advantage going into a fight would surely help you mentally too?
Since these **** suckers want to bring down the HIGHLY tested AMERICAN boxing fighters. WHAT ABOUT THE UK and GERMANY. What are there regulations for fighters that fight in there back yard? Who tests them. If it is anything like the buddy buddy referees I would question that ****.
please dont turn this into a europe v's america thread... i would simply like to get to the bottom of whether RJJ has used substances or not? any articles would be appreciated.
What about the UK man? It`s common knowledge if you take any sort of drug to enhance your capabilities in any field of play your known as a cheat. Noone is puttin a gun to there heads and sayin take this ****. So RJJ`s a cheat.Jeez man i did`nt know that!! Now thats opened up a can of worms Take all his credibility away don`t deserve ****
