Cheers I couldn't remember the timeline off the top of my head.

In that case i'd say only ali is above.

Just to add a contrast to flea, here is my latest top 20 from top of my head

    Fitz
    Langford
    Robinson
    Armstrong
    Greb
    Louis
    Charles
    Pep
    Ali
    Duran

    Gans
    B leonard
    R leonard
    Pea
    Ross
    Walker
    Burley
    Moore
    Canzoneri
    Mclarnin

@flea, i'm not saying he isn't great at all, I have him top 20 as i'm sure everyone does. I'm saying i've not seen him knocking on the door of the top ten before.

My list changed considerably since I shown it to someone who was like you but not you :good but I think my top ten is the same as it was.

McLarnin was a weight jumper himself, although remembered mainly for his Welterweight exploits. I don't think it really matters that his 'best wins were lightweights', Ross was a brilliant Welterweight as well. McLarnin was a pup when fighting Villa (tooth infection as we know, but according to reports still very game...and great of course) and McLarnins decimation of Corbett is probably the greatest K.O win never filmed. (Corbett III is in my top 50 or just outside of it, amazing fighter with a dense resume) Jackie Fields was a top level Welterweight, and whilst it's easy to dismiss LaBarba as being green he was an ultra-talented Olympic Gold medallist who was matched tough early and got results. McLarnin got the better of him over 3 fights as well.

As you know, I really liked your list :good I know I have Pep pretty high, but that is really high. BUT, see below :deal

In terms of Canzoneris placing, when you get to 1-10 and 11-20, all the guys are so evenly matched it's really a case of 'what you like'.

Great quote from McGrain: 'Boxing is not maths, it's music'.

How anyone can trash Durans record is beyond me!!!

Duran in his prime was amazing, anything less is sheer ignorance. Prime Duran dominated the Lightweight division for 6 years, post prime Duran went on to win titles in the Welterweight division and the Middleweight division (None of this light welterweight and light middleweight bollocks.

Guy was a phenomenon and a true warrior.

Yeah I somewhat agree it's tricky placing them. If we're all being honest, that's the fun tho right :good

Pep has one of the greatest prime records in recorded history and could barely be hit until a plane crash which he miraculously recovered from!

Past prime wins over saddler are amazing and I think it's a fair stretch calling anyone but pep the goat featherweight.

Screw mcgrain I spend all day teaching kids that maths is the most important thing they can ever learn

It kills me sometimes that boxing rankings are so fluid as opposed to formulaic. It'd be much dashes if it was just number of wins minus number of losses

Well, he did beat some top 140lb contenders/champion (or who would go on to be) in Mamby and Brooks, and beat Davey Moore, coming off an amazing win over a weight-drained, but, judging by the fight, still very very good Kalule, for the title at 154.

So chuck that bollocks in as well (and it is for the most part) and you've got a few more solid wins as well :good

Amen!!!! Duran is the most naturally skilled fighter ever IMO. when he trained and had his head right he could beat anyone from LW to WW, and that includes Benny, Pea AND Robinson. He probably wouldn't be able to out muscle him, but I think he could use his speed to land his straight right. Rob could probably take them, but these would be scoring shots. Robbo beats him 3 out of 4 times, but Duran nicks 1 on points

    :twisted::fire

Nah, Robbo is so much faster. Bad matchup for Duran IMO. Robinson had Hearns' power but ten times the chin and durability. Not many bad matchups out there for Duran, but at 147 Robinson is a bad, bad matchup for him (assuming he's a little bit faster than the middleweight version)

The thing with Ali, while he was immensely talented, but a few people don't even have time top 10 all time (some prefer to have Joe Louis although I don't agree). But you will always see Duran's name on the list, whether it be ok the top 3, or in at number 10.

I mean, just look at the Hagler fight. The Greatest LW ever, stepping up to tackle the middleweight champion who had reigned for 10 years! He went on to outbox Hagler for periods in that fight, and this is all while way past his prime.

For me his prime performance was Carlos Palomino. Leonard was obviously he best win, but he was absolutely awesome against Palomino.

I was about to post the same thing

Vano, I agree wholeheartedly about the Palomino fight. He is punch perfect against Guts as well, very underrated performance IMO, patient and clinical.

For the opposite end of the spectrum, Buchanan/Leonard 1 :bbb

Like I said m8 he beats Duran 4 our of 5 times. But I think Duran is smart enough to eak out a points win. I also think Hearns is a worse matchup for Duran, despite his dodgy chin. With his huge reach advantage he could jab Duran all night if he wanted to. Plus, I also think Hearns has better power than Robo at 147. Duran is a durable ****. I think he eats a few bombs, but ultimately figures Sugar out to nick the latter rounds. Does Duran get hit cleanly with enough bombs to knock him out when he is at his physical peak? I'm not so sure.
