Sugar Ray Robinson is the goat welterweight without a doubt. I also rate him as the goat p4p. However, is he really the goat at middleweight? Most lists on the internet rank him as #1 middleweight of all time. Some people say that his resume wasn't that strong at middleweight and shouldn't be #1. Is he genuinely the king of two different weight classes? Thoughts?
Personally I don't have him no1 but I would probably have him top 5. I don't get to into making lists anymore, its to much of a headache and at times it actually kept me up at night. SRR body of work and longevity at the weight is nothing short of amazing for a man who was naturally smaller and getting a lot of miles on the clock towards the end of his middleweight days. Middleweight is notoriously difficult to rank. The classic forum and the poster @Rumsfeld especially have done some fantastic work over the years to generate discussion about all time rankings. Obviously there is never really a "right" answer as it's all so subjective. But it's very enjoyable and enlightening to discuss each other's take on the subject and their justifications for their rankings of fighters. I think Monzon, Greb and Hagler seem to be interchanged by most as the no1 middle of all time. Whilst some have Robinson the no1, I think I recall the consensus, at least on the here, had him more around the 4-6 spot.
ATG welter. That is the division that defines his greatness. Just think, his first 42 fights were never video recorded. No footage a of a young SRR.
Your poll questions are a bit like Heads-I-win...Tails-you-lose. Neither one applies. He is probably not the GOAT at MW, nor is he generally overrated.
For what it's worth, here is how he fared in the Middleweight Survey from last year. This content is protected
Having Robinson as your 3rd or 4th best middleweight of all time seems right to me. As the greatest welterweight and pound for pound fighter of all time that's not overrated
Could argue the case he's the best ever at MW. He's also multiple times undisputed champion with a decent enough resume. But Monzon, Hagler and Greb achieved amazing things in that division.
Yes, he is overrated at middleweight. I think he would beat everyone in middleweight history but his resume wasn't the strongest. Monzon, Greb and Hagler must be competitive.
I believe the version of Hagler that demolished Alan Minter and Tony Sibson could beat any middleweight who ever lived. Of the top 4 mentioned Hagler , Monzon ,Robinson and Greb not one of them is going 3-0 against the others. Personally I'd take Hagler 2-1 Greb 2-1 Robinson 1-2 Monzon 1-2 just an opinion.
#1 at Welter all time. #1-4 at middleweight with Hagler, Monzon, and Greb having fair claims to the spot as well.
He was at his best at Welterweight but arguably the best ever at Middleweight. Who can forget the St. Valentine’s Day massacre.
