Yes all time greats can get beat but blown away on their best night when they are fully focused? Top five all time greats?
I don't think the examples you used are PRIME versions of the men who were blown away. A dissilusioned Witherspoon who now claims to have thrown the fight. You could argue Spinks, Patterson and Schmeling were either nervous or had not fought rated heavyweights for some time. Wlad did not by have the best chin, he got caught. Frazier was overweight and stepping up in class because he had been taking it easy.

size is a factor. Size can make a lesser fighter beat a better man and that is exactly why weight categories came in. I get that. But the weight of heavyweights through history in particular have as much to do with the training at the time. The pros and cons of artificial weight has to be balanced against the greatest fighters. It is just one factor. Albeit a big one. Again, it still makes it harder for the smaller man to win but banking on a blow out is just silly.

Johnny Shkor was not up to much by ATG standards but he was a quite resilient contender and I am sure he was brought up only in answer to Rocky NEVER fighting a super heavyweight.

There have been changes, and yes Marciano would get beat and he would struggle against some of the best, but nobody is blowing him out on his best night. Him or any other great fighter. Is Carlos deleon knocking out Marvin Hagler on his best night? I don't think so.

I'd probably make him favourite against anyone weighing 185 or below.

Here are a list of guys in that range:

    EVANDER HOLYFIELD (1988, 190LBS, 17-0)
    SAM LANGFORD (1913, 185LBS)
    JAMES CORBETT (1892, 184LBS)
    BOB FITZSIMMONS (1897, 167LBS)
    JACK DEMPSEY (1919, 187LBS)
    ROY JONES (1997, 180LBS ISH)
    JACK JOHNSON (1907, 185LBS)
    FLOYD PATTERSON (1960, 188LBS)
    GENE TUNNEY (1925, 186LBS)
    JIMMY BIVINS (1945, 186LBS)
    BILLY CONN (1941, 180LBS)
    HARRY GREB (1923, 168LBS)

There are loads of others of course, Harold Johnson, Tommy Loughran, Kid Norfolk, Joey Maxim...it's pretty competitive stuff actually. Thinking about, it's pretty obvious he would struggle as much as anyone else. May be the best of this lot though.

Harada would make him look like he was fighting in quick sand in a P4P contest.

Marciano wins 3 of the last 5 though, and thinks he's solved the puzzle.....only to lose 9 of the first 12 in the rematch anyway.

Rocky Marciano is a polarising figure today, but lets not pretend that both sides of the argument are as bad as each other.

Rocky Marciano’s detractors often accuse his supporters of labelling him as invincible, indeed they are sometimes positively paranoid on the point, but I cannot remember any pro Marciano poster ever putting him in the number one position of their all time heavyweight list. What they actually claim for him, is often comparatively modest.

The next question you have to ask, is which party is actually taking the initiative here.

For every thread praising Rocky Marciano, you could probably find half a dozen that are attacks upon him of one type or another. They range in severity from fantasy fights trying to find the worst possible opponent that a significant number of people will favour over him, to infantile diatribes against him. Whether you agree with the pro Marciano faction or not, their position is essentially a defensive one.

It never seems to occur to Rocky Marciano’s detractors, that their highly proactive campaign against him, forces those with a different opinion to respond to it.

The flak he's taking on this forum of late, Marciano really is "another Dempsey".

I'm sure some people here are convinced that Manassa Jack nor Rocky could not beat any man born after 1950.

At 6'3 and 210 pounds I'm pretty confident I could have kept Marciano at bay, as long as I do my roadwork, I have little to fear. :nut

    I would, also.

I think his effectiveness tails off rather quickly against skilled larger opponents, moreso than very quick, mobile fighter like Jones, Jr or Greb.

Langford, Dempsey, Tunney and Greb are probably his toughest possible opponents.
