I totally love debating with you too, mi amigo ( Spanish lessons are starting to pay off ), but you are to Jones, what Suzie Q is to Marciano.
That is the TOTAL strength of it. Jones fan boys have more excuses than Tyson freaks, but the FACT is those KO's, by those kind of fighters disqualify him from the higher echelon's of ATG ness. Added too by the style of the KO's. This guy wasn't just out for 10, he was fuking comatose. Even Seamus, who I consider to be one of the more objective posters is claiming to " not know where the bar should be set " well a good place to start would be to just rewatch those KO's and say to himself " well it's obviously got to be a lot higher than that "
He'd have beat Greb, Charles, Marciano, Archie, Dempsey on the same night after a nice game of basketball.
If he didnt pop hot for PEDs Id say he had a lot of natural athletic ability, but given that sad fact I think even that is a big question. Best ever? No. Not even close. I dont even think he was close to being the best of his era when you take into account the PED use and his overprotective matchmaking.
I saw most of Jones's early years fights on HBO. I never like his arrogant attitude but when you look at his record it is very good. He beat Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Mike McCallum, Virgil Hill and even John Ruiz. He has a good 61 and 8 record. And 12 successful defenses of the LHVY Weight championship. So I would rate him in the bottom half of the top 10 LHVY in history. Not the best.
Another point if Jones would have retired in 2005 his record would have been 49-3. When Sugar Ray Leonard retired in 1997 he was just 36-3.
I think he appears on film about as far ahead of his peers as anyone that's ever boxed. That's not quite the same thing though. But it's a relevant observation I feel.
The losses can't be overlooked. You can't simply ignore them. Although I never really thought that his past prime losses affected his legacy that much. But I'm now starting to see that they have to many people. But you do seem to focus mainly on the negative points of his career. It's just sad to see a once great fighter carry on way past his best. But it happens. Roberto Duran was one of the greatest ever. He's a favourite fighter of mine. But he got beat up by William Joppy, and suffered 16 defeats in his career. Granted, he had many more fights than Roy did, but he still lost to guys who would never have beaten him when he was younger. Roberto Duran is just one example of many. Despite how his career has ended, Roy is one of the greatest fighters of all time. I believe that he's criminally underrated. He has a resume a lot better than what most people believe, but they say he never fought anyone, due to how easy he made it look for the most part. Again IMHO, Roy at his peak was capable of beating anyone in history from MW-CW.
