You need to go back further in time. Casuals forgot Bivol existed but he was hyped when he first came onto the scene. He even had Andre Ward pushing him as his successor when Ward retired with Ward critics saying he retired to avoid Bivol.

 

I'm going back to right before Canelo chose him which is most relevant. He was inactive for almost 2 years , then had 2 average performances in 2021. Whatever hype he had was long gone.

 

Good thing hype is a poor indicator of quality.

I also had Bivol boxing his ears off. Point is what the general perception was. Canelo did not pick him because he thought he was the toughest challenge on the table.
