Ugas was a good fight and I'm sure Porter would run it back if it was a difference making fight he had no problem rematching the great Julio Diaz one of the the latin 4 horseman.
Gatekeeper in insulting hes a former world champ.. and got to war with the top guys hes a A- or A grade WW jesus.
didnt he lose to Broner as well? could have sworn he did. ahh never mind he was knockdow, but he won . just looked it up.
Definitely elite. If Porter had judging in his favor like a Canelo, Andre Ward etc.. we would talking about the #1 or 2 P4P fighter. It’s crazy how big marketing is when it comes to judging but it can’t be denied. With A-Side marketing he would have elite wins such as Prime Brook, Prime Thurman, Danny Garcia, and Errol Spence. Also he has very good b-level wins such as Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Ugas, Berto, Broner and Granados.
This is a good argument. I always suspected that there's world level then theres elite level. But if he had the privileges that Canelo has then he'd easily be considered elite no questions. I'll call him elite
For me that’s what set him apart from someone like Cuadras who also is world level and fought the best of the best. He fought tough fights with Estrada and Gonzalez and even have a win over SSR but his losses to the elite were clear cut.
Not for me, he's a world class welterweight but my definition of elite is the best of the best and for me the only elite fighters at welter are Pac who is a legend, Crawford who's a multi-weight champion and perhaps Spence who is arguably the best in the division right now.
Elite literally means superior, exceptional, when compared (in this case) to other welterweights. Using that definition I'd probably say he is elite. I don't think it has to mean he is something special as a boxer, at a technical level, or as a power puncher, or that he is super slick or brave etc...it just means that, when compared to others around him, he can be considered. He could be the most awkward, technically awful fighter lacking the most basic fundamentals, but if he's knocking people out and is in the top 3 or 4 then, I'd suggest, that qualifies as an elite fighter. (Not saying that describes Porter per se, just an example) I mean, ask yourself how many fighters at 147 can beat him? If it's barely a handful, he's in the elite. Who do we put above him, aside from the obvious examples of Spence jnr and Crawford, and maybe Pac? Viewed this way, if a man is among the best 4 or 5 welterweights on planet earth then he can be considered an elite operator. Plus, I'm slightly biased as Porter is my kind of fighter - rough around the edges, but very strong, tough, and with a huge heart. I just wish he didn't wear those outrageous suits
Mr. Porter is one of the few great fighters of our generation that hasn't "popped" yet. Still, his resume speaks for itself and he should be known as a great modern boxer. His straightforward style and never say die fighting style have earned him great acclaim.
There's a missing level or two between 'elite' and 'B level' and it's there where Porter resides imho....
