He hasnt looked as good his last few fights. And his style which is all out pressure and ruggedness is the hardest style to maintain as a fighter gets deeper into his career. Porter from 3-5 years ago would have bullied Ugas. But he strangely chose to box which isnt his style or strength.
I was gonna make a thread on this if there is anything you have to say . Say it now You never know if Spence stops porter Then people gonna be saying Spence beat a shot shawn Porter
Can’t tell if he’s slowing down or just trying something different He had controversial wins but they were wins He took less punishment and I think showed more wrinkles we don’t normally see
He also chose to box against Garcia. He surprised me and looked good in some of them rounds. Although very strange as you've used one style throughout most of your career and been successful.
Now that Porter is over 30 years old he’s struggling to get the excess weight off to fight at 147, since Porter is naturally a middleweight. For the last two years he’s looked drained in every fight and his performance has been horrible. He needs to move up. The years of draining himself has caught up with him. Porter most likely would’ve had more success as a pro if he stayed at 160 or even fought at 154. Forcing him to move down to 147 was a big mistake by his father. I think this is also the case with Hurd, who is starting to look drained at 154, since he gassed really fast in the early rounds against JRock before JRock even started putting work in on him.
Anybody follow porters early career or ams? This boxing approach, did he used to fight this way and took on the mauling when he got to the upper echelon at welter or was he a mauler early on
At the higher weights (154 to 160) he was used to being the faster guy, so he used his superior mobility and boxing skills to beat his opponents. At 147 on the other hand Porter’s speed is nothing special, so he had to change his style, which was to smother his opponents and use his strength advantage, since even at 147 when Porter rehydrates he tends to have a strength advantage over most guys at 147, but it also made him one dimensional.
Whether due to weight, age or accumulated punishment, I do think he has slowed down a bit. It'll still be a good win for Spence if he gets it, but I think Porter's prime ended around the time of the Thurman fight. That was the best version of him you could get.
I think he’s just trying to change his style to be more of a boxer than a swarmer. I don’t think he’s past his prime yet but I do think his original swarmer style works better for him.
I know I'm in the minority, but I felt he looked quite good against DSG. Granted his last performance against Ugas wasn't good, but that could have been a one off. We will see.
It depends on who hes fighting. If hes fighting Spence then hes at his absolute prime. If he was fighting Pac he would be over the hill or close to shot coming of a fight where he looked like **** and was lucky to get the decision.
