He may be. Some people may like the skill and brilliance of Andre Ward. But he's also a little cautious in the ring. And kind of an arrogant and somewhat deluded douchebag. Kovalev is very entertaining, but also a little predictably ruthless. You know he's just going to brutalize everybody with hard jabs and straight right hands. Smith Jr. We never know what we're going to get. We keep waiting for him to be over his head, but he just keeps winning and giving the pain. A little wild in the ring, a little reckless. But ALL HEART. He's like the redemption of Kelly Pavlik. Its been a while since we had a blue collar white American to pull for. Kelly Pavlik was a garbage drunk. You can take Pavlik out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer out of him. Smith Jr. Is a respected tradesman. Hope he does well. And I want to see if he can keep on knocking people out.
Come on man.Cruiserweight is above 160... the most exciting and best division in boxing full of killers
What has nationality/race got to do with anything? America haven't got no great black hope there either.. yank cruisers haven't been able to compete at the top of the cruiserweight division for a long time.
Clearly that's what excites the OP, having a white American to root for at high level. We all know there are much better and more exciting talents at both 175 and 200 of course.
Joe Smith is just a plodder with some power who got lucky against Fonfara and was nearly outfought by a 52 year old man. The hype surrounding this guy is ridiculous. The most watchable fighters north of 160 are Kovalev, Beterbiev, Lebedev, and Joshua.
Personally I prefer AJ, Beterbiev, Kovalev, and a few others..... But Smith is growing on me. Hope he continues to improve.
Smith is exciting, he's story is captivating and he seem like a really good guy. Good power and comes to have a scrap and has two back to back good wins which have put him into the mix int eh division. i rate how exciting a boxer is on their style, power, style of boxing and technique plays a part. On a lesser level i would also call unpredictablity as a positive trait but not as highly as the other 3. An example of this is amir khan, people like to watch him because you never know when he will go to sleep, there is still that thinking with smith. in terms of excitement id have Joshua, gassiev, povetkin ,kovalev, beterbiev right up there, smith isnt on their level of boxing. i also don't know why american boxing fans are so focused on race like him being a white american matters, he is american first and foremost and see no reason to like a fighter more for being black, white or whatever i will however tend to root for a fighter who comes across as a food human being ,who is talented and exciting , so in that aspect id hope smith will do well(however he is in a division of killers and he is going to get seriously hurt by them) my favourite american boxers are tim bradley, terence crawford, mikey garcia mainly because they are very good fighters and seem like good people too, if smith somehow can beat one of the big boys at 175 he will be added to that list
Vartan Avetisyan is a blue collar white Armenian prospect who campaigns North of 160. He's a 10-0-1 (9KOs) SMW. Does he not fit the bill?
That's a term I haven't heard in a long time. Unacceptable in this modern, politically correct nightmare, I'm afraid. I think Tommy Morrison was the last boxer to be publicly referred to as a "great white hope" by the media.
