The standard story is that Lewis took Rahman lightly and trained in Vegas instead of South Africa so that he could do Ocean's 11. In this clip from the Shane Mosley-Shannon Taylor fight though, the HBO team says that Lewis is in Vegas because Manny was working with Wesley Snipes in a boxing movie ("Undisputed")...

Do you credit him for his performance in Rahman 2?

Lewis was in the movie, or was he? CGI.

My impression is that Steward sometimes spread himself too thin, that said Lewis was no kid, he shouldn't have needed a kick up the backside to tell him to buckle down and not underestimate his challenger. I don't know the circumstances of Vegas.

Lewis is the one to blame. He took Hasim very lightly, and why wouldn't he?

If you remember the timeline, at that time Oleg Maskaev was brutally and early KO'd twice in back-to-back fights vs Kirk Johnson and Lance Whitaker.

And everyone (including Lennox) couldn't forget brutal KO when Maskaev KO'd Rahman through the ropes.

So Rahman wasn't considered as serious challenger for Lewis, 4-5 rounds of work max (the rematch showed what Lewis did to Hasim when he was prepared and focused).

Steward also never expected that Rahman is serious threat, in fact he thought it would be easy tune-up fight before multi-million dollar fight vs Tyson.

Yeah Lewis gives up the title and the earning power it affords him.Takes a chance that he will get a rematch ,all so he can say he won it 3 times .Never mind the fact that he can also say he was ko'd by a man he should have wiped the floor with.
Makes perfect sense! Why didn't the rest of us think of that?:huh
I just hope the rest of the forum give your insight the respect it deserves!

    Yes I did :yep

    I like exposing conspiracy theories.

We all know Lewis lost on purpose to become 3-time world champion.

And Tyson lost to Douglas on purpose to become 2-time world champion :deal

I always thought Steward did a disgraceful job for that fight.
Even before Lewis lost I was apalled by the cavalier attitude and comments coming out of the mouth of the "great trainer".
I've repeated it often here, but the comment he made about him and Lewis not needing to acclimatise to the altitude and climate of South Africa "because we travel a lot anyway" was terrible.

And the fact that he took the job of working with Naseem Hamed for the Barrera fight which happened in Las Vegas just 2 weeks before the Lewis-Rahman fight in South Africa !

And, yes, both Lewis and Steward were making movies in Los Angeles.

    Naseem Hamed lost badly.
    Lennox Lewis was KO'd badly.

Lewis and Steward suited each other though.

They are wrong. Lewis was indeed filming Oceans 11, and was more interested in that than training. As someone wrote in the other thread Lewis was like a star struck kid hanging around with nonentities like Brad Pitt, Clooney and some slag called Roberts.

He has no one to blame but himself. The Heavyweight title of the world should ALWAYS be considered more important than some fukin actors.

Did Steward ever give it all for anyone other than Hearns? It always seemed like he took on a lot more top fighters than he could possibly micro-manage - especially later in his career.
