He also thought there would be a rubber match in the not to distance future as well and thought he could redeem himself but he was wrong.

 

Perhaps that would have happened if Leonard hadn't retired. After beating Cuevas and Moore, Duran was a draw again. Defending his belt against Leonard instead of going after first Hagler then Hearns would have made sense. Or even after the Hagler fight, because that elevated Duran's stocks even though it was a loss. Fighting Hearns's leftovers wouldn't have made any sense for Leonard, though.

But challenging Duran for the WBA belt any time between when he won it against Moore and relinquished it to challenge Hearns would have made a lot of sense for Leonard if he had stayed active. If he won, there could have been a unification bout with Hearns on the cards. And after that either a mega showdown with Hagler or the lesser, but still stiff, challenge of facing Curry either at 147 or 154. After Curry obliterated McCrory, a fight between him and Leonard would have been a huge draw. Probably the biggest fight that could have been made in boxing next to a Leonard-Hagler meet.

The absolutely dream scenario would have been to first challenge Benitez after he had beaten Duran, then unify in a fight with Duran after he had beaten Moore and finally a rematch with Hearns before challenging Hagler the following year. And as the icing on the cake facing Curry at 154 after he had beaten McCrory.

Lots of "ifs" in this, but still not an unrealistic scenario had Leonard stayed active and hungry.

 

Rahman beat a past prime Tyson. It's about beating TBE fighters at their best.
If you're 2-0 against TBE's and did things that were legitimately great, you are definitely a great.
