at all the people saying no footage of Robinson at 147 while there is footage that i posted in this thread. I just googled "Ray Robinson welterweight footage" and got all of those..

There's even some footage of him as a lightweight Amateur out there too.

It's funny how spelling/grammar doesn't seem to be a prerequisite for acceptance into such a prestigious organisation.

Admit it bud, you're a newbie who's been into the sport casually for a few months and simply can't get past how technically sound/rigidly Marquez and Lopez throw their punches. You have no understanding of the finer points of the game but somehow believe you have a gift for clarity that none of the rest of the boxing world grasps. In essence, you're an ignorant boxing peon, on a par with the rest of the General Forum.

 

H2H? Possibly. A threat to any style really.

Achievements? He's up there but you also have to consider Ross, Armstrong, Robinson, Gavilan, Napoles, Griffith,etc.

General really lets me down at times....too many trolls.(Not calling the OP a troll but in general there's many trolls. Finding good posters here is like trying to find hay in a needlestack)

 

Chalk that up as another win for me. I figured you "Ivy League" boys would be able to put up a better case.:-(

 

What some don't understand it's not simply about skill and how aesthetically pleasing they were to watch. Dominance and length of reign go a long way in grading someone on their status in weight class. Yes, Leonard looked and was amazing as a welter and had some high end wins, but when you get into the reign at the weight that's what separates him from the likes of Robinson and Gavilan, both of whom I have rated ahead of him. His reign as champion in the divison only lasted 2 some odd years ( only 1 before being dominated by Duran). In comparison to Robinson's whose reign lasted 4 years and Gavilan's 3 some odd yrs. Gavilan also campaigned at the weight for his entire career before trying to make a ill move for the middleweight crown, which essentially ended his career. I think we are all aware of Robinson's record at the weight.

So when you add up all considerations when giving a grade then there's a case for a few men being considered ahead of him.

 

Yes he is. My third favorite fighter of all time. I can't say Robinson is the GOAT at 147 because their is little tape of him.

 

That wasn't a domination. Duran is one of my fav fighters but that fight was a consistent tide-changing kind of fight. In no way was it one-sided it was a close but clear win for Duran. I do agree with Robinson & Gavilan being ahead of him as does Ross. Armstrong & Napoles also should be over Leonard. SRL should be ranked around 6-8 All Time as a WW IMO.


As far as guys saying there's limited footage of Napoles or Robinson, there is still recorded information on those guys that needs to be considered. SRL a GOAT at WW, I love him but that's ludicrous unless you mean H2H-wise. As for overall achivements at the weight he doesn't rate over Napoles, Robinson, or Armstrong for example.

 

I think at 147 Hearns could beat him and he proved it to me, but he ran out of steam and Leonard showed what hes made of.
Why was there no rematch at 147 ?

 

Leonard made of great account for himself for his performance in the later rounds, but it was a DOMINATE performance by Duran. Arguably the greatest performance in the history of boxing.

 

Leonard could have gotten him out of there a lot earlier to be honest.

 

Even Though Hearns Lost To Sugar, I Rank Him Ahead Of Him. He Beat SRL's Ass The Whole Fight Until He Got Hurt With Two Rounds To Go. And He Clearly Beat Him Years Later In A Rematch. Plus SRL Ducked A Immediate Rematch.And He Ducked Arron Pryor! I Mean SRL Won Based On Two Good Punches, Tommy Put Sumthin Serious On His Ass! His Face Was Deformed After That Fight1 Tommys The One Who ****ed Up SRL's Eye! I Also Think Hearns Would Have Knocked Out Hagler Had He Not Broken His Hand! I Don't Even Know How Hagler Can Take Credit For That Win! When It Was Clear That The Man Was Defenseless And Couldn't Throw Punches To Defend Himself.

 

Yeah, I said Duran won it clear. As far as greatest performance I don't think so but I do think it's the best performance of the Fab 4 fights. Duran is the only one to beat a prime Leonard.
