Yep. ****ing garbage. The only decent thing he accomplished in his career was KO'ing an even BIGGER piece of ****. The Reid fight was disgraceful. At one point the ref warned Reid for hitting Ottke. **** you, Sven.
Why should Calzaghe be the one to dump his title and become a mere contender for Ottke's title and not the other way round? I know that Ottke's IBF title and later on WBA title were more recognised but we has die hard boxing fans should have learnt by now that that it's the fighter that makes the belt not the other way round. Why dump your title and prevent a unification match and lose any leverage you would have as a title holder? Yes Ottke did fight his mandatories and I must admit he did fight a better level of opposition during his reign. That's the one thing that turned me against Calzaghe. His opposition was often terrible.
Well it would have made no sense for Ottke to drop his belt(s) for two obvious reasons. 1. His belt(s) where (are) the most respected 2. Being mandatory in WBO doesn't mean you get to fight the champion - especially not in SMW with a Warren fighter on the throne
Well - as mentioned - I also consider the Reid-fight a steal. As for Williams - the referee was spanish - not German and I think it's more a case of a very poor referee than of cheating... On a sidenote Williams should have disqualified for those lowpunches - hell he makes a few uppercuts to the groin of his opponent!!!
The referee was terrible, they often are from the euro continent, they seem to have no consistancy and seem to love giving standing eight counts like it's an amateur match. But the bell being rung early was definately cheating. Williams does have a convienient habit of landing low blows when he's struggling. I have never liked Williams ever since he low blowed Sprott and then sparked him out with a huge left hook while he was doubled over in pain. While Williams does possess huge heart he is a very dirty fighter IMO.
Well from reading this thread I think he is underrated as a boxer. Even he is German etc etc he still was a very very difficult opponent for the people who fought him. The gifts he got has been seen much worse other places and I think he is the best German fighter for a long time (take away Klitchko). Every time I have seen him fight I have wished he would loose also because his style was extreemly negative and almost ANTIboxing. But he had the best defence I have seen in a european fighter and similar to Calzaghe he was really able to spoil his opponents style, he had a great footwork. Basically he was very good with everything not involving his hands, which is why I call it anti boxing.
No not underrated, as he is by no means underrated here - his home country. Whether he s underrated in other countries is none of my business and only mildly significant to me. That having said and on a difefrent note, his boxing style was not the most thrilling one, depending on one“s personal taste of course, for my taste he was too defensive minded but he was brilliant at what he was doing.
You think he is "underrated as a boxer", yet "he was very good with everything not involving his hands, which is why I call it anti boxing." Interesting.
Underrated in the sence that people write he was total garbage, and what other stuff that has been written here. I do not think that it does him real justice.
Nah, it's not that simple. Toney always has serious problems with fighters that can move in and out, in and out. Ottke did it. Quickly.
You've got to be joking??? 1m$ - Ottke got more than that fighting handpicked opponents at home. The 1M-offer was made time and again - both ways - Kessler/Palle made a similar offer for Ottke - all just PR - nothing but PR!
