"No way [does Canelo have to face Benavidez next]. Great boxers are the ones who beat champions. I think Benavidez is a good fighter, but up until this point, for me he has not achieved what people think. "My respects to him, but just take a look [and tell me] how many world champions has he beaten, how many defenses of his title has he made, how many unifications has he completed. We are going to look for the challenges, we are going to look for the champions and we are going to look for what's best for the career of Saul, and if the fight with Benavidez comes around, then we welcome it... it's boxing and it's business."
Benavidez is the only guy other than Ginger in that graveyard of a division with a pulse at the top level. He's the only threat to Clenelo in that wasteland of a division and even though I'm a big fan of his and admirer of his skills, style and sheer ruthlessness bordering on pure evil in between those ropes even he hasn't beaten anyone of any note yet and ideally needs more experience against top competition to stand him in good stead and maximize his full potential. But that's been the fight at 168 to make for a while now and and he would've been arrested for triple homicide if he gotten his hands on Plant, Smith and BJS 2.0 and Reynoso knows it too and his excuses don't wash. It's a sad division now...alots of gatekeepers and journeyman,no new prospect,no champions anymore...only Canelo who's going to vacate soon. It's a wasteland like SERGE said.Benavidez sure gonna be champion again if he stay at this weight.
This don't make sense when you consider: Canelo is wearing Benavidez's title that he never lost His first fight for a "title" at the weight was against the well "accomplished" Rocky Fielding His last fight was against someone who has accomplished far less than Benavidez, and who's best win was outdone by a Journeymen.
Canelo has destroyed the top fighters of this division with the exception of Benavidez. Benavidez has also done himself no favors with his self inflicted issues. I'd like to see Canelo fight him but I hardly see this as a duck.
I have seen Benavidez fight and consider myself fairly educated and analytical when it comes to boxing. What are you guys all impressed with by Benavidez? He leans in too much and looks open for uppercuts and bodyshots.
News flash! Team Canelo has announced the IBF number one rated boxer will face the Ginger on Cinco de Mayo, 2022.
Benevidez has fast hands, great punch technique, above average power, a genuine enjoyment for hurting opponents, and I don't think he will fight scared against Clenelo. But unproven as he is, he's still a far greater threat than Fielding, Smith, Yildirum, Saunders, and Plant.
