I must admit I haven't followed Chagaev's career (prior to the Klitschko fight I've only watched the Valuev fight). I read a post just now, about Chagaev not being the same fighter he was before the injury, and I was wondering if that is really the case. I'd really appreciate the opinion of guys who have actually watched Chagaev's previous fights and can compare that version with the version that fought Wlad. Has he deteriorated much in his last fights? :think
You're only as good as your opponent lets you be. Was James Toney as incompetent a fighter as Roy Jones Jr made him to look? Was David Tua as incompetent as Lennox Lewis made him to look? Was Ricky Hatton as hopeless as Floyd and Manny made him look? Chagaev will very likely go on from here, defeat Valuev in the rematch and reign with his title until Vitali manages to sign a deal to fight him. This guy can box - he was an amateur star, he beat Felix Savon when he was still basically a boy. Michael Spinks - they say he was one of the greatest to lace up a pair. What happened to him against Tyson?
I totally agree, this is definitely a fact. But I wasn't asking that... Except if you're basically saying that people who say Chagaev isn't the same fighter he once was, are just misguided from what we saw in the Klitschko fight. But they mention he hasn't been the same for 2 or 3 fights now, that's why I'm asking if this is true.
From what fans of his amatuer days have said he has never brought his best to the pro ranks. Sadly, he has been some degree of shot for awhile, and in addition ot the hepititis and leg injury, rumors of partial blindness and numbness in the extrememties exist. This is not to degrade the man, his accomplishmentss, or Wlad's in beating him. He is the third best heavy in the world with big wins over Valuev, Ruiz, Virchis and Skelton. Its just that he would have been even better had he turned pro several years earlier.
I see, thanx for replying. This is another reason why Wlad has to fight Haye then, so that even haters will admit they've been unfair with the guy. PS: You're the historian guy if I remember correctly, aren't you?
Chagaev would knock Haye out. Vlad would have easily stopped Haye, I hope Vitali goes ahead and knocks Haye out in Sept.
You may be correct, as Chagaev certainly didn't look as good against Drummond and Skelton has he had looked against Valuev. Even so, however, Vlad deserves full credit for his very dominant performance yesterday.
