Is the criticism of Chris Algieri as an Amir Khan opponent justified?

Yes, I know 95% of the forum hate Khan and whatever he does would be criticized.

And yes, there are better opponents out there, and yes he is blatantly ducking The Special One. And yes Khan would probably win comfortably.

But is Algieri that terrible an option, if he feels the risk of Special K is that high.

Algieri only has one loss, to Manny Pacquiao. But he also defeated Ruslan Provodnikov last year and became a belt holder at 140. He is also clearly a superior fighter to one of the other highly rumored name in Adrien Broner too.

Algieri isn't a "bad" fighter, but he's an awful choice of opponent when Khan could be fighting Brook, Bradley, Keith Thurman etc. Then he completely contradicts himself along the way.

He could also face Broner though and Algieri gives Khan more trouble than that journeyman.

That fight would be disgraceful. Two of the worst chins in boxing. I think Broner's would be the one to get scattered all over the ring though.

I'd find it quite funny because I enjoy seeing journeyman Broner get a beating, even if it's from Khan. It's a shame Broner has a poor chin because I could imagine Broner taking a record breaking number of punches if he had a good one.

I think Algieri is a pretty good opponent for Khan. He will show the world that Khan is levels below Manny/Floyd and should be fighting contenders in the division not waiting on the PPV.

he said at an interview that him and kell did together in the uk that if kell won a title against alexander he would fight him and he would beat him right to kells face... now that hes a champion he says he brings nothing?:huh... its pretty clear khan is ducking brook in order to keep fighting soft touches in hopes of someone like floyd or pac giving him a shot, which is slim to none...brook, broner>algieri its just what it is...:yep

Journeymen don't win world titles in several divisions. Broner isn't a P4P talent, but he is a good boxer. He would have been a better opponent than Algieri. That's a very poor, play it safe fight, waiting to fight either Pacman or Floyd. I don't mind Khan, but I expected better from him.

Bradley is a very good fight - as Bradley is a world class fighter. Khan has no responsibility to fight big hitters in every fight, but we should expect him to take on top quality opposition.

This dude said it perfectly. When you wanna fight Mayweather, you better be fighting the top dogs at 147 - Brook, Thurman & Bradley :deal

    Gifted titles*

Who did he beat for his first world title- a guy ranked lower in a division below than Rod Salka was when he fought Danny Garica.

Yes he beat Tony DeMarco but that was the weakest champion i the weakest division in boxing an easy fight stylistically.

Then he avoid 140 where there was no champions he could beat, fought shot pillow fisted Paulie, got ludricously wide scores and was allowed to get away with whatever he wanted including kicking Paulie in the conkers.

As it stands, Algieri winning 1 world title against Provodnikov is more impressive than Broner being gifted 3.

And if you think Broner is better than Algieri, watch both their fights with Taylor.

And if you think Khan wouldn't absolutley savage Broner in brutal and embarassing fashion, watch all their mutual fights against the trio of Carlos Molina, Paulie and Maidana. Khan vs. Broner is a much greater potential mismatch than Khan v Algieri.
