Is the Cuban Boxing Team good this year? I know a lot of there gold medals winners left Cuba but do they have fighters in this year team that can win gold. I know they have a lightweight that pretty good in Yordenis Ugas and they also have a good Middleweight Emilio Correa Jr but does anyone else have a chance to get a gold medal?

That's what I wondered. I don't really know many of the fighters they have at this Olympics, I mean I know names but I don't know how good they are.

Imagine how many medals they would rack up if they still had Rigondeaux, Gamboa, Lara, Barthelemy, Solis etc.

Not really. And Corea won't win gold at 75kg, Matvei Korobov will.

Trust me, even when a gold medal winner leaves the Cuban squad they have 2 or 3 replacements capable of winning gold to fill his place.

Cuba is a production line of great amatuer fighters

Not really this year. Their team is pretty young and inexperienced internationally.

Ugas could win Gold. I would say Gavin was the favorite till he pulled out. It depends on if Tischenko is on form or not and what the draw is; either of them could win Gold. Same with Correa. It depends on the draw; if he fights someone very good in a preliminary he might not medal.

I think Tishenko was the favourite in that group still although Frankie beat him in the Worlds

Cuba is definetly a good boxing school. But let me explain you something about Cuba olimpic boxing team. Since they can't turn pro. They are amateurs for ever. Thats what they do for a living. When you compare against other teams you see a huge diference. Example: Team USA Younger is 18 older is 23. Team Puerto Rico younger is 19 and older is 22. Team Cuba younger is 21 and older is 30. The difference on experience and body maturity is HUGE. Thats why Cubans look so good. And some of you might say 30y/o is too old. But remember, they are not fighting 12 rounds.

Acero has a point when he says cuba have many boxers. But you have to remember. Once they have you as a boxer, THATS WHAT YOU DO. Is not like you can choose to do something else. Specially knowing that if you are a good athlete the government will take good care of you. At least better than the rest of the population.

still why are the soviets who were in the same moral dilema of punching for pay being too capitalist still getting bulied ou tof the olympics a few times? soviet fighers were clearly not the better fighters in the amatuers. they were formidable but could be beaten.
the cuban system have all there elite fighters housed under one roof "firme" and are trained together. with loads of trainers with all the support that can be brought to them.

american ams are housed in different gyms and have different trainers around the country and only really meet up around championship time.

Well... the team is definitely going to miss Gamboa, Barthelemy and especially Lara and Rigondeaux... too bad Rigondeaux jumped off the boat, now he's in a very bad situation back home.
