Is the Muhammad Ali trophy the new gold standard in modern boxing?

  1. Yes

  2. No

  3. Depends, yes if enough ranked fighters are in it.

No because it's ultimately still a case by case basis on how good the entrants were.

You can beat a dude who is ranked outside the top 20 in the opener, beat an injury substitute who is also ranked outside the top 20 in the semis, then beat the #4-6 guy in the division to win the trophy. And that could/would be less impressive than what probably a couple others in the division did in that same year span.

However, when you do it like Usyk did or you're in that sweet bantamweight field, it is quite an achievement that the trophy merely physically represents. Still just resume assessing with any crowning "belt" or "trophy" as always.

So the winner of the 168 Callum/Groves fight is the clear man? On the level of a lineal champion?

vietnam couldnt bomb america even if they tried, america did napham vietnam without effort though
there was no risk of America being attacked by little hutmen in Vietnam, the only risk was them being dumb enough to believe it and then getting chopped to ribbons in a foreign country for murdering the locals.

hes the dominant man, but agreed the SMW tournie was bound to be weakazz when it had lumberers like Braehmer in it.

I am actually thinking this would be the best opponent for 3G after Chunky, if Chunky happens. An intradivisional clash between the MW number 1 and the SMW number 1. 3G's projected third battle of the elites.

That is if chunky happens and he gets past chunky.

Well, if you have a field of 8, you are probably going to draw several in the top ten. I think if you have a #1 or #2, with a few other top ten opponents, its legit. Besides some top dog have too many bogus title fights. I think you see a lot of mid level top ten guys going in.

Since the trophy and concept is new those who voted " no ", might change their minds in the future.

One clear point, the winner of three fights in such a tournament likely has 2 or 3 wins from the top ten, which by itself is impressive as some Champions lack this.

I never said the winner of the 168 Callum/Groves fight is the clear man? I did say Ward being the super six winner defined the 168 pound division for a while.

It's better if you can get all world belt holders init, with 8 boxers all are fighting for a belt.Unless one boxer in that weight might hold say 2 belts.

    You said the above.

So yes, you did say the Callum/Groves winner is the clear man.

And I disagree with that. And that is what my post elaborated on.

The tournament theoretically pits top fighters against each other. We the fans are certainly much better off and grateful for it. But not all of the fields will be created equally. And I'm guessing most of them will not crown an undisputed champion. It still ultimately means much less than the lineal title (which is up to the beholder of who the #1 and #2 ranked men in each division are). The argument that it could be more important does not exist because there is no requirement for the very best from each division to participate.
