I agree, this is just another act to get fans behind him. Of course he was able to do that well against a D type oppenent, lets see what happens when he gets in there with somone that could actually punch and see what happens.

Finally. I appreciate the fact that you were able to look at that Ruiz performance objectively minus all of the Ruiz hate. It was the single best performance by an American heavy in recent memory and he threw some very solid shots. I'd like to see him in the eliminator bout as well. The only thing I take issue with is your ill comparison of Ruiz to Tyson. As soon as I read that I had what's known as the bitter-beer face plastered across my mug. Let's all parties in attendance agree to never speak of this moment again and forget it ever occurred. Agreed? Agreed. No harm, no foul. All is well.

P.S. Please don't make me wear this again.

    Move over young Tyson! :smoke

(maybe that's going a bit far, but still.........Ruiz looked very impressive in that fight, bum opposition or not)

Zakman you have forgotten that we are not talking about whom would beat whom or who you believe would beat someone else. Let me go over Ruiz' last few fights and make a few comments

Ruiz-Tisdale- Destructive, he was impressive, he looked pretty fit for 240
Ruiz-Chagaev- Very close fight, very close Ruiz looked better than he had before, he did little holding and he did a little more boxing
Ruiz-Valuev- Johny beat that 7 footer, that fight was closed but I really believe Johny got robbed, he did little holding he was actually very aggressive.
Ruiz-Toney- Toney was better but the only cheater on this one was Toney, whom tested positive for illegal substance.
Ruiz-Golota, I believe this fight was really close too. Many believed that Golota won but their only arguments were the knockdowns, I think Ruiz won more rounds, though the knockdowns I think would have made it more of a draw
Ruiz-Oquendo- Very hard fight, clinching, but defenetly no cheating that left hook that caugh Fres was explosive. Ruiz took him out
Ruiz-Rahman, a lot of holding, alot from both. But Ruiz did the best job, he rocked Rock a few times throughout the fight.
    Ruiz-Jones-Total domination by Jones

Zakman, you do not know your boxing, you consider Ruiz a cheater because he clinched, but what about Jones when he was clinching constantly against Ruiz, Or johnson with those low blows, or Holyfield with the headbutts and the wrestling moves? You are clearly biased towards any boxer that is not Ruiz. You could never see a Ruiz fight and give him props, you are so biased that you could never clearly see a good fight or admit that he does good. Unfortunately we cannot change the way you think. That's sad it's boxing fans such as yourself that diminish the sport of boxing and the good discussion. Your hatred towards a boxer blinds you. If he was so irrelevant to you, you would have just skipped this post. Your opinion will not change anyone elses, because you are biased and you will always be, what a shame.

Other than that they both used illegal and disgraceful tactics in the ring, that's where the comparison of Ruiz with Tyson ENDS!!:yep

True indeed. But I don't wanna take this performance out of context. It was against a Can as I mentioned in my opening post. My biggest delight came from the fact that his style changed as opposed to his sheer domination of his opponent.

I dunno about Brock, man. That was a mean L he took against Klitschko. It could take a lil' while to shake that off. Let's see what he does against Chambers first. There's absolutely no basis to give Thompson a better shot than Ruiz against any top-rated opponent. I dunno what Ruiz is gonna do once he gets his chance at the top, but here's to hoping he does exactly what he did against Tisdale/ :cheers

The silence is deafening.........The Quietman, John Ruiz!

That'd be a good catch phrase for Ruiz in his latest incarnation.

I doubt the WBA will change their plan to have Liak fight Valuev, and I bet Ruiz will end up fighting someone like TOS, next.

But I'd like to see Ruiz get a Golota rematch.

I've been following this sport for 30 years, and what "diminishes" it is fighters getting title shots, and "winning" fights because they have connections to powerful promoters or networks. There is no better example of this than John Ruiz, a mediocre regional fighter who would never have been ranked, let alone "won" a title without his connections with King.

From the moment King manuevered Ruiz undeservedly into the ratings, he was overmatched, so what did he do?? He started holding excessively - and King's influence allowed him to get away with it. The other thing he did was in several fights where he was hit with body shots was to overact to force "low blows" calls. This happened against Jimmy Thunder in 1997, against Holyfield in their second fight, and most famously, against Kirk Johnson. If the rules were properly enforced, the refs would have counted him out when he was on the canvas hamming it up in these fights. There are few things that DISGRACE, or "diminish" the sport more than unsportsmanlike and shameful conduct like this.

Ruiz is a FRAUD - a mediocre fighter with all the boxing ability of a high-grade clubfighter, who got lucky, signed the right contract, and then proceeded to get blatant favoritism from refs and judges alike. It is THE worst case of boxing corruption I've seen in my 30 years of following boxing. There is just something WRONG with a mediocre fighter like this "winning" fights in this way - it cheats his opponents and it also cheats boxing fans. Any fan of legitimate boxing - practiced WITHIN the rules - should hate Ruiz. He, and those like him, truly DO diminish this sport.

Damn, Zak, you just won't let up. You won't give Ruiz an inch.

P.S. I didn't know elizerme86 has been here long enough to develop such a strong opinion regarding you. I guess people can pick up on your dislike of Ruiz quick!

The really sad thing is that if you have been following for 30 years, your either 40 or a little older and yet you still express yourself as a whining little boy. All you do is whine and whine about Ruiz, I joined this board about 3 weeks ago and all I hear you do is complain and complain. I don't think Ruiz cheated his way up, because if Don king would have maneuvered him like you said, then Don would have kept him fighting bums and people that were not threats. But John took all comers he took on everyone and those fights you mentioned , Ruiz won them fairly. Yeah he probably took long to get up after the low blows, but hey you know what? the RULES say that he has 5 MINUTES, 5 MINUTES!!! It's an actual RULE, which he followed! And where you insinuated that he Don used his influences to give him the fights are lies. Because I myself am a fair scorer and I scored those fights fairly Ruiz still won, just like I scored the Jones and Toney fights which Ruiz lost. Ruiz won if anything one round against Jones and that's giving him a lot. So please stop whining sir. Nothing you say can change the fact that Ruiz fought those fights, won those fights and whether we like it or not, or whether you like it or not, he is now part of history as the only Latino and 1st latino to win a Heavyweight title, which he did. Thanks. :hi:

You can insult me all you want, friend - but that doesn't change the reality that excessive holding is against the RULES, and overacting to get unjustified low blow calls when hit with body shots is just plain DISGRACEFUL. Knowledgable fans who care about the integrity of this sport and don't like the fact that it is CORRUPTED and DISGRACED when its rules are repeatedly broken.

Lest you think this is just MY view - let me quote the words of respected boxing writer Ivan Goldman (KO Magazine, June 2005):

"Rules governing Ruiz-like tactics are basically standard among all the major commissions. Article 8, Section 337 of California's official rulebook list fouls that are subject to penalties, including disqualification. Among them is "excessive holding or deliberately maintaining a clinch.' Another no-no is 'wrestling.' That closes the case on Ruiz."

Corruption is bad for the sport. Having talentless frauds like Ruiz holding titles illegitimately is bad for the sport. I care about this sport, and its integrity, and I will continue to speak out against cheating of this nature. It's WRONG, period.

You're not getting my point Zakman, it's useless to try and make you see. If Ruiz didn't have talenet he would have never got as far as he did before he started clinching. He didn't clinch all the time, he was an outstanding amateur, he won many titles as amateurs. I didn't mean to insult you, I mean to show you how biased you are,how unfair you are. Because you only see Ruiz' flaws but fail to see the flaws of those that Ruiz fought. I mentioned you a few but that does not matter to you, because you really do not like these guy, just like many other people. But that doesn't take away the fact that Ruiz does have some sort of talent, he is not Ali or Jones, but he has some talent at least give him that, admit it you're wrong. It's okay you can say it, you won't be consider less, but you calling him talent less is plain wrong. You're desperate attempts to prove otherwise are just sad. It's useless talking to you or trying to argue with you. The beautiful thing about this is that I don't have to agree with you, and nothing you could say would ever change my way of thinking.Nothing you could say.

I don't expect to change your mind - believe whatever you want to believe. But most boxing fans know Ruiz for what he is - a limited fighter who benefited from preferential treatment from refs and judges, and violated the basic rules of the sport with impugnity. Some care about it more than others - but the vast majority of boxing fans recognize it. Ruiz is about as limited as it gets for a rated fighter - and without Don King, he would have been lucky to be a gatekeeper, let alone a beltholder.

...............that said, I think it'll be interesting to see if Ruiz can stick with his new aggressive style against someone in the top ten, and refrain from reverting back to his excessive clinching style.

I think the guy has obviously stepped back and decided it was time to stop doing what made him so hated. LOL HIs style was pretty effective, if the ref allowed it. His lunge, club, clinch, then repeat style was hard to counter. t was very hard for most opponents to deal with, but the trade off was it made him the most despised heavyweight curently fighting.

Let's hope he can refrain from doing the excessive clinching style from now on. But I bet it'll be as hard as quitting smoking.................LOL

    Yeah, you're probably right.

Here's my thing about this. The majority of the people that voted don't think Ruiz is the best American heavy yet they offered up nothing in the way of an alternative. All they want to do is be dismissive and that's it. I wish they actually thought about it enough to sit back and realize that, hey, yeah, Ruiz is indeed the best American heavy but their unbridled hatred for Ruiz would not allow this to be. And if they did think about it that's probably the reason they didn't offer up an alternative because there is none.
