After Mosley last night and Hopkins with Pavlik it made me question whether i and others are too hasty in writing fighters off as shot.Mosley was fantastic last night make no bones about it.After his last fight i would have called him shot.I know styles make fights but Margarito was simply given a lesson by a 37 yr old man who looked like he was 27 last night.
But there must be more to it than meets the eye.We make a judement on what we see in the ring in the main but what about all the stuff we dont see?Trouble with making weight, injuries and training camps not running smoothly. We all like to think we are expert boxing fans but i think from now on i will try not to write fighters off after 1 or 2 off nights and wait for more conclusive proof over a longer period of time!

Mosley was never shot, though. He had a poor night against Mayorga, he's still past prime quite logically, but thats not shot.

Barrera is in the same situation.

I have learnt through many embarrassing personal misjudgements, to use the word 'shot' only with hindsight.

    it is.

    Ali against Holmes was shot.

Mosley against Mayorga was a mixture of different things which made mosley look poor, but he was not shot.

Also the use of 'shot' damages fighters records, for example Calzaghe, Hopkins was shot (until the schooling of pavlik) and so was RJJ, yet they showed enough in the fights that they were just past their best (RJJ to a greater extent).

Jones was shot - Calzaghe even said so three years ago :patsch

    Hopkins wasn't, by any means.

It does annoy me though, when someone defeats a guy and all of a sudden he becomes shot overnight......

Tyson was shot when he fought Lewis - well, to most smart observers (other than Sky hyping the promotion).

Tszyu became shot after Hatton beat him.

Hopkins was past his best when Calzaghe *beat* him - though Joe was himself.

There is a difference between each scenario. Thankfully on the Brit forum we can differentiate. Shame about the GF though, but anyways :verysad

Yes it is used far too often. There were mitigating circumstances for why Mosley looked bad against Mayorga.

in the days when fighters fought 3 timea month you coudl see a decline or a prime. shot was a valid word.

but now guys can take a step back and then wlak back into the ring and nothing changed.

look at terry norris being shots by about 28, most writers saw in the gym and in the ring his decline....but mosley hopkins ect are never lookign bad they arnt missing punches and they are not taking them either.
