Wlad: 8-2 in his title fights vs Americans. Defeated Brock, Austin, Byrd 2x, Brewster, McCline, Mercer, and Jefferson. Lost to Brewster, and Purity. Ibragimov 2-0 in his last title fight vs Americans. Defeated Briggs and Holyfield. Maskev 1-0 in his last title fight vs Americans. Defeated Rhaman. Valuev 4-0 in his last title fights vs Americans. Defeated Donald, Ruiz, Barrett, and McCline Lyakhovich 1-1 in his last title fights vs Americans. Defeated Brewster lost to Briggs. Totals of Eastern European fighters vs American fighters in WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO heavyweight title fights. 16-3 in favor of the Eastern European fighters. 16 to 3? * Although Chagaev WBA champion he has not fought a title bout vs an American. Chagaev did defeat Ruiz in a title eliminator. The future? It appears Brewster, Briggs, and Byrd are on the decline. Rhaman is listless. It appears Povetkin is on the rise for sure. Dimitrenko , and Virchis can win belts down the road. Vitali Klitschko may return. None of the current champions are old. There are no USA heavies out there that appear to be good enough to win a belt. If Povetkin beats Byrd, at least 8 of the 10 ring magazine rated heavies will be non-amercian born. My Conclusion, the USA is out of the heavyweight business for now. I don't see it getting any better for at least six years. The World Amateur championships held this October and the Olympics in 2008 will tell us who the best amateurs are, and if a USA heavy does well, its a good 4 years before he's getting a title shot. Which USA fighter has the best chance to win a belt? Maybe its Mesi or Thompson, but I would not pick them.
Last time I checked though boxing was a world thing, and not just on a country stage. I'm sure someone could go back and pick out points in history when American's were beating other countries. I think heavyweight boxing is in fairly good shape. It's just that some American fans and writers can't deal with that fact that they aren't American, so they say they are awful. I get the point of your post, but I'm not sure it's saying much people didn't already know.
good post, sad but true. It seems like heavywieght boxing is missing that great superstar, I know myself am waiting for the second coming of Tyson or anything that could spark my interest again.
a good american heavy will come along. not this current crop though. chambers is a good talented fighter but i think he will struggle with one of the tall stand up boxers with a good jab, who wont let him slip inside. but matched right he is a handful skillwise.
america as a country is rich, and there's no need to box like there used to be to make money. america can stand aside for poorer countries to partake
i saw a documentry that said 17 million americans lived in caravan parks and 2 million slept rough . just like europe , plenty of poverty amongst the mercedes.
If wealth, or the lack of it, was a measurement for how many boxers the lowers classes can produce, we´d have nothing but african champs. I think it is more complicated than a matter of being poor or not.
I mean african-african, not african-american - I could have said indians as well. India-indians that is, not the american version.
I think Brock has a decent shot at claiming a belt sometime in the next few years. Eddie Chambers and Chris Arreola at least look to be decent. Mesi has looked very good in his last three fights, although he needs to step up his opposition, and soon. Thompson has a very good run going, but comes across to me as being someone a little too limited to win at the top level.
Fair enough but the best young athletes who show promise in sport are moved toward football, basketball, baseball etc.. Boxing is a sport lost over just a couple generations in my opinion. (in America)
American kids are too interested in Football and Basketball, and that hip-hop **** and video games, they are to fat and lazy, boxing takes a lot of work and few and far between (AMERICANS) are willing to invest in it. The Soviet bloc fighters will reign for a very long time:good good for them they have earned it!! good things come to those who work hard.. I am American and it dosen't bother me in the least to see the Eastern Euros kicking American AZZ:hi: And it seems as though young Americans are more interested in the UFC AND MMA??? FOR SOME REASON:nut iDUNNO MAYBE BECAUSE THOSE GUY'S DON'T CHICKEN OUT OF FIGHT'S AND ARE WILLING TO FIGHT THE BEST!!:good
MMA will surpass boxing as far as American participants go because IMO there's more martial art schools and wrestling programs than boxing gyms. You could probably find at least a handful of kung fu, tae kwan do, jujitsu schools in the phonebook but you'd be hard pressed to find a comparable number of boxing gyms.
