This fight has been heavily promoted in the UK to the casuals or sports fans (what ever a sports fan is) This fight has been on mainstream TV programs more than any of AJs fights

Not sure if it’s relevant but may give an indicator to how the PPV numbers trend. The peak viewers on the YouTube stream for wilder/fury was 11,500. While the McGregor/Khabib fight had 300,000 live viewers. The McGregor buy rate is projected for 2.5/3m buys. That gives an idea of the casual market. This fight will sell but not break any barriers in the U.S

I’m talking about the original announcement press conference that happened a month or two ago.

I dunno about the last bit, right now I'm catching AJ's Lynx TV advert more than I am anything to do with Wilder/Fury.

But this fight is being heavily promoted in the UK. The fact they were on Good Morning Britain was a surprise. Fury rarely gets put on live TV he's too unpredictable. But would of been more impressive if they were on the BBC instead as that's the morning show most people watch, GMB doesn't even get 1 mill viewers.

Sure hope not. Those casuals would get the wrong opinion what boxing is about that way.

I have limited access and haven't seen much of the pressers but the marketing approach feels dated.

A lot of lessons have been learnt in marketing over the last ten years or so, primarily around the integration of digital into wider marketing messaging and the effective use of social channels.

The raw materials for this fight are fantastic. Whatever the concerns about his resume Deontay wilder is a marketers dream. He has charisma, charm, a good looking guy with a great back story that taps into family, the American Dream, Olympics etc. If your looking for stories to fuel your marketing, as they should, then he has one of the best. They just don't seem to know how to make use of it?

That's not to say there isn't a place for the panto elements, they can help grab some exposure, but they'd be more effective if they were presented with more context and a sense of a deeper narrative at work.

The danger is this fight could end up being an absolute stinker, with Fury running all night and Wilder windmilling away at thin air. That's the reality of it. For all the bravado and bluster in the build up, it could be a PR disaster if both men don't deliver in the ring. American crowds won't hesitate to start booing the place down if there's a lack of action. That won't be a good look for the division or the sport as a whole.

I like your scientific approach in the post above. Something this forum is usually sorely lacking. Welcome aboard.

May be worth keeping an eye on how BT Sport promote this, particularly if they have much access to the fighters to film some promos. They have an excellent in house marketing team and clearly understand how to put together a modern campaign. I don't know quite how much they'll be engaged in a ppv event but if Warren and Finkel have any clue they will try and make as much use of them as possible.

My casual mates at work were talking about how cringe and **** it was yesterday. They weren't impressed at all however the fact that they had all seen the press conference is a positive sign that it's doing well even if the thoughts on it are negative because at the end of the day casuals like hype and that sells the product so I'd say yes.

I think the most recent press conference in Los Angeles summed it all up. No crowd, no atmosphere, and Fury asking them who Deontay Wilder was and none of them knew. There was more supporting Fury in that crowd than Wilder, pretty embarrassing.
