Is there a case for Dempsey beating Usyk?

Not doubting Jack's physical abilities over a 4 round fight at cruiserweight. But he was fighting cro-mags. The closest thing he saw to a Bivol in skill was Gibbons and Jack had to low blow Tommy into submission.

Always a chance when someone is that fast and strong.

Watch the move Leo Cruz used to drop Wilfredo Gomez - Shane Mosley did the occasional at 135lbs… it’s written about that Jack made those sorts of punches on the weave famous… we don’t have all his film in his prime so I can’t find compete “Dempsey triples” in that old footage, Jack himself said the waiting, the long breaks and lack of fights ruined him as a fighter. The one I remember is a right to the heart, weave into a hook to the solar plexus, you now have a position outside there left shoulder for your right hand… there’s a bit going on at the feet so try to visualise - Sal Sanchez pulled off some good punches on the weave against Lil red just not overly well he got square at the hips and in his stance as he did it.

Gibbons being compared to an amateur is hilarious. Bivol is a symptom of decline.

I can't see Dempsey beating Usyk. Usyk is too good a ranged fighter and defensively a very clever fighter. He has faster hands than Dempsey and better feet. Worse, he has stamina for days and has never been knocked down.

I think the usual Usyk blueprint would apply. Dempsey would start out fast and Usyk would give ground as he figured out how Dempsey fought and his timing. After the first few rounds Usyk would start to combine harder punches into his usual jabbing and cuffing shots to guage Dempsey's reactions to them. By the second half of the fight I'd expect Usyk to be in control and peppering Dempsey.

I'd say that JD might have his best chances against Usyk over a 4-6 round fight, because Oleksander generally takes a bit of time to download his opponent's strategy and Dempsey was a fast starter.

not to mention Sharkey kicked dempseys ass for 6 rounds (5 rounds to 1 on my card) and with the new HD enhanced film, Dempsey unequivocally and unquestionably went low on Sharkey and should have been DQed

firpo and Willard? Really? These bandy legged primitive crude dandelions couldn’t carry the jockstrap of Usyk.

I don't think Usyk has faster hands than Dempsey. But i can agree with the rest.

Wow that's one platinum thread. "Amateurish" Bivol is a symptom of a bad era. The likes of Rodeo hand Willard and an absolute nothingburger in Firpo being in championship contention are a sure sign of boxing's lost Golden Age i take it?

Usyk(or Bivol for that matter) is almost like watching another sport next to giants Dempsey beat.

Modern science has given Usyk a big edge in size. It probably also enhanced his speed and strength. Take away that hugely unfair advantage and it's anybody's fight but I like Dempsey a little more.

Yeah, he's got a great chance, a good, fast combo puncher, destructive, and at the 200lb weight limit there wouldn't be that much between them size-wise (Usyk still a bit bigger though).

Usyk would start a favourite but I wouldn't rule out a minor surprise here.

Dempsey was way ahead of his time, but he still had severe technical deficiencies for today’s era, not to mention today’s best p4p boxer. The two best boxers Dempsey ever faced, he arguably lost 25 of the 27 rounds against, albeit Dempsey was aging. Usyk not only is a level above Tunney and Sharkey, he also possesses big height and reach advantages with an incredible savy mindset how to maneuver around the ring. Oh, and he can punch very hard and in bunches. Also, a southpaw. Just too much to overcome
