Is there a current boxer that could be demoted to a gatekeeper status?

I always thought that gatekeepers are fighters who extend their career over their expiry date that they should not be fighting opponents they are fighting when they are prime, not necessarily as a testing ground for upcoming young fighters.

For starters, RJJ for me had reached that status. He had no business fighting Danny Green, a legitimate light-heavyweight, although already 36 years old, is really big. And fighting for a purported 1-3 million is not exactly in the RJJ's league.

I also have a feeling that JMM is starting to knock on that gate. All the talks of bradley vs. JMM, or JMM vs. Juan Diaz, Malignaggi, does not exactly give credit to his accomplishment. Hatton vs. JMM is a good fight but it is also a loser's fight, nothing to prove except that it is financially rewarding.

Although gatekeeper per se is a term used to denote fighters who are used by young and upcoming prospects to test their mettle - thus gatekeeper, I actually freely included fighters who are not supposed to be fighting opponents they are fighting now if they are still the draw.

How about Juan Diaz, 4 losses in 5 fights with the only win is a SD against Katsidis.

I have been thinking of Guzman as well. Obviously he did not go very high, being a champion but fallen so much.

A gatekeeper is someone like monte barret...edner cherry, rocky juarez is almost a gatekeeper....zuniga, ishe smith....valuev i think will soon be a gatekeeper...

A gatekeeper for me is a fighter used as a measuring stick against the up and coming young talented fighters....A gatekeeper is someone that is much better then a journeyman and could give someone problems...but is not a live underdog most of the time....simply used for judging the progress of other fighters....they also seem to have longevity to their carears....

True, but not all titles are as difficult to win. Hell, sometimes there are gate-keepers that are better than some champions.

    True.
Hatton battered malgnaggi pre pacman, so gatekeeper is pretty unfair. Also I doubt he will ever be a gatekeeper, in that he will never fight up and coming fighters, he has done his graft, it will be 1 maybe 2 more big names to pick up his big pay cheques and then by by.

I wouldn't call Cotto a gatekeeper either. Contender now is more apt.

JMM isn't exactly a gatekeeper either, he is just trying to milk some big pay fights before he retires also

Agreed, Monte Barrett is a perfect example. I don't think that you could discribe Cotto as a gatekeeper at this stage.
