Is there a current boxer that could be demoted to a gatekeeper status?

Cotto, suddenly become a gate keeper? Are you serious? Tell me, who can beat him at 147 aside from Mayweather?

Montes slipped further than gatekeeper. After watching him lose to a goon on Saturday he is now a journeyman and needs to retire.

For the past few years, I have been considering these names as gatekeeper:
    Juarez
    Soto
    Katsidis
    Miranda
    Cintron
    Judah
    Clottey
    Malignanni
    Collazo
    Quintana
    Forbes

Currently, I have to put Diaz in the category. He has slipped big time.

You mean like Erik Morales (the gatekeeper in his fights against Pacquiao)?

MAB the gatekeeper in his rematch with Pacquiao?

DLH the gatekeeper in his fight with Pacquiao?

Hatton the gatekeeper in his fight with Pacquiao?

Cotto the gatekeeper in his fight with Pacquiao?

All the fighters I mentioned were coming off losing recently in fights that were of significance.

Which one of the examples I mentioned is not a good example of gatekeeping???
    Help me out here Pejevan?:D

I think Judah's been a gatekeeper for some time now, but I will mention his name anyway.

nah, some of those guys arent gatekeepers- theyre just former champs who are now being used for young guys to make their name against. a TRUE gatekeeper- is someone who has stayed at the same fringe contender status for a very very long time- who is consistently the same- and can be relied upon to be themselves- no matter what- year in and year out. they wont score upsets- but they wont lose to bums either. they ll do the job. hence a gatekeeper is handy for matchmakers to guage their talented stars against.

Hence the term- once you beat a gatekeeper- you become a contender. the guys named are former greats- who are now being used to market based on name- not on true gatekeeper material.

Gatekeepers- are guys in the past like Mayorga, Augustus, Barrett, etc.

The rankings imo are roughly as such:

    bum
    taxi driver
    tomato can
    journeyman
    professional
    Tv fighter
    division ranked
    gatekeeper
    contender
    champion
    pound4pound

something like that. so a gatekeeper isnt a contender, nor is he a journeyman. hes somewhere just outside the elite- he makes an honest living- but he aint ever gonna be a champ. someone like lovemore ndou to me , is a perfect example of a gatekeeper. he s a pro s pro- he aint going top 5- but he aint gonna get knocked out by nobody either. he s a perfect guy to test a real talent against.

Agreed, I like this definition. It's a solid fighter who's mixed with class operators and a win over him will push an up and coming fighter into more geniune contention

Ben Tackie is a really good example of what I consider a gatekeeper to be

If Arreola doesnt get serious about getting in shape he will be a gatekeeper in a couple of years.

There are many types of gatekeepers. . .

Some guys have always been gatekeepers such as Grady Brewer, Monte Barret, Cisse Salif, Larry Donald, Bobby Pacquaio. . .these guys usually almost always beat journeymen and totato cans.

Others were once champs or even ATGs but have declined, such as Holyfield and Rahman who are both established gatekeepers by now. Holyfield is a sad case cuz he is an ATG who has declined to gatekeeper status.

Juan Diaz may very soon become a gatekeeper, esp if he loses another fight against a name opponent. Zab Judah is another example of a gatekeeper at this point. If Barerra were to continue fighting, it would likely be as a gatekeeper, although likely a relatively well-paid gatekeeper due to his name.

Yet others are constantly shifting between gatekeeper and fringe contender/title-shot level status. Two SWs come to mind: Edison Miranda and Librado Andrade. I would also include Glen Johnson in this group. Zab Judah may actually climb to this category with a string of victories.

Yet others such as Cintron, Quintana and Clottey I consider bona fide fringe contender/title-shot level guys. In my opinion, I think they are a step above a "pure" gatekeeper.
