Mayweather JR. vs Chavez is a good example of a fight that Mayweather wins and Chavez loses.

Maybe Whitaker and Napoles, Duran and Pryor beat both.

The likes of Duran, Napoles, Whitaker etc I think they both lose to tbh, the first two especially. They were a step above JCC and Floyd in my eyes.

Mayweather being naturally a bit bigger and rangier and filling out so solidly at 147 probably helps him against common opponents at that weight, as does him being less frazzled and drawn at 130, though that was more towards JCCs latter days there tbf. In between though at their respective peaks I'd probably give Chavez the edge as a h2h force.

I could see Mayweather being harder work for the likes of Cervantes, maybe Nelson etc than Chavez. Arguello an interesting possibility too. Chavez though might match up better against the likes of Ortiz, Armstrong, Elorde, Laguna etc, though whether he wins is another matter entirely.

I dunno Journey. There are only two facets where I could entertain an argument for Chavez having an edge and they're both arguable at best. Chin and consistency in cutting off the ring and they both come with asterisks imo.

With the chin argument, I'd say that had Chavez fought the fighters that Duran did past his prime, he'd be getting knocked out. Nor can I imagine the likes of Randall knocking Duran down. That said, it's hard to imagine De Jesus knocking Chavez down weirdly. Chavez was truly made of iron, but so was Duran.

In terms of cutting off the ring, Duran was faster of foot and more rabid in his earlier incarnation than Chavez, but Chavez was more consistent and focused against movers in his prime. Constantly looking to systematically close the gap and barrel moving targets into a corner, where Duran was evolving and experimenting/honing his more textbook underpinning against the likes of Viruet, Bizarro, Ortiz etc who ran like the wind. Though against great movers like Buchanan, Marcel and Fernandez his closing footspeed was scary.

Duran was really though better in every other department. Chavez looked more textbook but that's not the same as having better technique.

I know you didn't ask but that's my ten bobs worth.

Maybe, Chavez wasn`t great at welter and Napoles was far more proven at that weight, I feel Floyd would have done better v Napoles as they had the same reach, Chavez only had a 68 inch reach which hurt him when he faced fighters with a longer reach, Roger Mayweather lasted longer at 140 against Chavez, however Roger`s 73.5 inch reach didn`t help him at 135 v Chavez though.

Azumah Nelson was too small to beat Floyd, it would be like the Whitaker fight at 135.
