Every action has a capable counter action, it keeps the world in balance.

Knowing what to throw, when and how is a different matter. Counter punching is a very difficult thing to do.

russ is a good guy and has had great success but his teachings are flawed.

as for the best counter punch....it depends on circumstances, positioning, capabilities etc...and for the guy who said this isn't science....you are wrong. it is very much science. that's why so few ppl do it successfully.

I'd say 99% of what I've heard Russ say is right on the money. He preaches good balance & stance, solid footwork advice and short blocks/slips that don't leave you exposed on defense. Basically, great fundamentals.

The only thing I've heard of his that I disagree with is about the left hook.

Check out the videos below. One is Russ talking about hook the other is Freddie Roach on the same punch.

Pay attention to their difference of opinion on follow through, where the punch stops, etc..

I've talked to different coaches and everyone has an opinion.

Still, interesting to see the differences.

i'm familiar with the videos. i've seen them all. i know there are different schools of thought on everything in boxing and there is no one "right way." as for russ...his flaw is in the foundation. the stance in particular. it's the reason a 46yr old bhop was able to beat a much younger/stronger/faster/more athletic pascal.

It's David Lemiuex isn't it? I always wondered that.

Great thread btw, I love these discussions.

You can only jab with your front hand, not your rear hand.

There isn't one best counter for every punch, there are many. It depends on your stance, position, what your opponent is accustomed to, etc.

For example you can counter the jab in 5 different ways (jab, straight right, right uppercut, left hook, left uppercut) and one isn't objectively better than the other.

I personally like to counter jabs bc that is the most abused punch and for good reasons. It is suppose to be the safest punch to throw bc is the fastest punch BUT most noobs shoots it too predictable and lazy with it and is extremely easy to predict. Since i am not that good in hooking over str8s and shooting pull counters which i am too scare to try, I just parry the obvious jab and hit my opponent when they are off balanced with jabs, hooks.

I do not dare to time guys jabs if they are experienced. THey will double up or triple up or looking to hit u with 3-4 hit combos when i'm trying to time them. Sucks.
