is there a special temperament that draws guys to cage fighting over boxing?

They'll let you throw hands, tough guy. Just go in there and tell them you think BJJ is for pussies and you want to test them. They'll ****ing wreck you without ever throwing a punch, like you were a small child. You already know this, but since this is an online forum you'll just keep spouting off anyway.

i've seen plenty of guys in mma lay on their backs and do nothing against skilled opponents.

in both sports...if u want a fight...there has to be two willing participants.

So true. I dont know why people dont appreciate both. MMA is way harder in my opinion.

Yes. Decreased hand eye coordination and speed.

I say that with the utmost respect for MMA practitioners. If you reduce a sport down the more "gift dependent" it becomes. Boxing has less weapons so it is more "limited" as far as strategies go. It requires more specialization where an MMA practitioner needs a range of skills AND a specialty.

No sport is better than the other, but Boxing limits the weapons so is a bit harder to master and apply strengths. MMA allows a person to play to their own individual strengths.

There are numerous gateways into MMA, and many people get into it from another sport or Martial Art (eg wrestling, judo, muay thai, karate, TKD, even pro football). A lot of people I know who train MMA started due to a certain area not been covered in their existing training, or because they wanted to put their skills to the test in a "live" environment.

On the other hand, people rarely fall into boxing in the same way. You start training boxing because it is something you want to do, or as an outlet when there is nothing else to do. It's generally not a hobby in the same way that many train MMA.

Counter-intuitively, the learning curve is much steeper in a single discipline like boxing, whereas natural athletes can progress relatively quickly in MMA. Personally I found training boxing to be more frustrating than MMA, and it took longer for things I'd trained to work in sparring.

Huh? This the exact opposite of what it means to be a BJJ practitioner which is arguably the base of MMA. This is being replaced by wrestling and they are masters of GRINDING. They muscle out wins. This is disciplined intense training, not agility and physical gifts. Though they admittedly help.

If you are in a shell and not punching you are not Boxing. You are surviving. MMA is the exact opposite. If you had the speed, agility and talent to KO a guy you wouldn't risk grappling with him. It adds too many variables. Which brings us back to who is now dominating MMA? Strikers. How are they KOing people? Hands.

I'm from the UK and do a bit of boxing and have done MMA training for about 1 year in the past. To be honest I think that I could do MMA because I've been to club shows and the stand up was poor and the grappling was as well. That's in the UK though where there is no popular grappling sport like wrestling is in the US and Jui Jitsu is in Brazil. In the UK at least I'd say boxers are better fighters, as we saw with Mark Potter probably doing better at MMA than boxing. Some of the true subtle genius of Mayweather's boxing could leave him open for a take down, Jui Jitsu masters could be ground and pounded by Wrestlers, wrestlers open to KO's etc. I have trained with some top Jui Jitsu guys though and they are good at what they do. You won't see a true master of boxing enter MMA in the near future as there's more money to be made in boxing for them. Most of these MMA guys you see on TV have mastered 1 art and brushed up on a few. If you want to see a perfected art watch the sport itself if you want to see it used against other arts watch MMA.

Wrestling if offered free in american schools, so a lot of guys just start doing that from a young age and MMA is their only oppurtunity to make money as a pro athlete.

All of this bollocks that you can't out skill people in MMA like you can in boxing and you have to be big and strong is bollocks Bernie. Have you done both sports or have you justed deduced that opinion from watching both sports? I have grappled Ian Malone who is a brown belt 2 tags and pro MMA fighter 130 lbs lighter than me, I could take him down and out muscle him but never once sub him. He was just too skilled, also I know a BJJ black belt who's been KO'd by lesser fighters.
