It's not stupid, just people acknowledging the reality of the situation. Now if there are people acting as if it's some unwritten rule in boxing, then that IS stupid.

I believe that all the phrase was originally meant to mean was that a draw results in the belt not changing hands. Hence, you having to win to get the belt.

I really hate when a chalenger is trying to win by stealing rounds :barf . Look at the Quilin fight scoring. Were the judges right to score it that wide for him even though he was the chalenger? I think it also has something to do with fights usually taking place in champions home towns.

I agree it is stupid. Still I don't score even rounds and sometimes that might be a criteria if you feel that the round is dead even. I still try to find some other factor that separates them though.

No, that's the best saying in boxing. It makes for exciting fights. It doesn't allow fighters to hold or run for their lives.

Would you prefer, "You need to run and hold like a ***** to take the belt from the champ?"

Still, from a personal perspective I can see why boxer's clinch and box negatively, but it doesn't help the sport from a fan's perspective.

Imagine if every fight was like Klitschko vs Ibriganov or Froch vs Dirrell or Abril vs Rios?

    Who would watch the sport?
