Is There Any Point in Wlad Defending Against Mormeck?

He's in the tiny, tiny category of those who will take the fight, have beaten any name fighter at heavyweight, and aren't scheduled for another fight already. Almost everyone else is either beaten by Volo already, injured, claims they aren't ready, are simply not willing, have a fight scheduled or nobody's ever heard of them. It's as much a foregone conclusion as you can get in boxing, even though you really never know. It's not even slightly interesting to the majority of us, and certainly not the casuals, but when the options are so few, the point is to fight. The fight in and of itself is the point. Period. It's only activity against a willing name. Volo's not sitting on the title until someone worthy and willing sets themselves ahead of the pack.

What should be happening is Volo/Povetkin. Povetkin and his camp are the reason it's not happening. They don't want it.
I have no problem with the fight, under these circumstances, as far as a choice, but also no interest. It's just some bleh that's happening whether we like it or not.

 

None whatsoever, but they're stuck for live bodies.

I'm sure hoping that the delay will lead to a switch of opponent or something. Because it's frankly pitiful to see Mormeck getting this shot, given how underwhelming he's been as a heavyweight. It'd be like Al Cole getting a shot vs Holyfield in '98, and no offense to Al either.

 

Considering that they both fought this year, just months apart, it's interesting that you mention that match up.

 

No jmm isn't an even a top 50 hw and would probably lose to the real jmm in a hw fight.

This actually makes me wish the chisora fight would happen now.

 

I guess after the super-fight with Haye, he is supposedly getting an easy fight vs Mormeck and he should dominate but Mormeck has been known to fight and put pressure on a fighter and did have Haye on the deck. Also this gets Klitschko in front of a lot of French fans and helps to build his fan base. Not many fighters out there now so like Ali,and Holmes did,Vlad is taking a so-called easy fight...he is entitlement and really who is out there now that has not been beaten by a Klitschko

 

Other than staying busy? No, not really..

 

It's just a stay busy, keeping active fight...admittedly a very easy one..no it's not good, but it keeps Wlad in the spotlight and it's at least a defense.

Plenty of HW champs have fought no-hopers to keep them busy... Lennox had ****** Fortune, Bowe had a used up Dokes, Larry Holmes had a few of them, Ali had Dunn and Coopman, Frazier had Ziggy... Hell, go back to the barnstorming days of Jeffries or Fitz and you see all kinds of undeserving names.

He's not getting any younger, though, and he has a limited window to make a really lasting, emphatic statement... a career defining win. We'll see if that opportunity, or that opponent, emerges.

 

At this point..its just good to see Wlad in the ring. With the David Haye " business and other injuries..he's became grossly inactive. Hopefully he can get back up to 3 defenses a year. At that pace, I'll take 1 no hoper to every 2 contenders..or yeesh, even the other way around.

 

Yes, very true...everyone should be less myopic and remember this before dumping on Wlad for taking on a no-hoper...they all did it occasionally...my gosh, Joe Louis have his bum of the month club...
