Is there any truth to the legend that Dempsey was out of the ring for more than 20 seconds in the Firpo fight? I have heard media people like Bert Sugar comment that the Dempsey vs. Firpo film was edited, and there is a South American version of the fight that shows Dempsey out of the ring for more than 20 seconds. If this is the case, then Firpo should have won. The films we have seen appear to be edited when Dempsey was knocked out of the ring, which in my opinion was part shove.
Also Firpo was a Latin fighter it makes sense the South American version would be edited to make sure it looked like their fighter won. Dempsey floored Firpo SEVEN times in the first round and TWICE in the second. Despite this i'm sure the better fighter won
Even if it was edited, there doesn't seem to have been a significant difference in time between the edits. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyCgxRntVwg[/ame] 5:10 The first knockdown scored by Firpo in the first few seconds of the bout is also edited out.

I never heard about the out of the ring time being edited down. I had heard of Firpos knockdown being edited out.
No, I dont there's any truth to it. I can see on the film that where the footage cuts from a close view to a further distance shot, the referee and Firpo remain in exactly same position. 5:06 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoSEEXIe6Gg[/ame] If anything, the idea that Dempsey was even out for 9 seconds seems likely to be inaccurate and a myth, and reported because it seemed so dramatic at the time. I think he fell out and was back in straight away, I dont think his legs and feet even leave the ring, and he's most likely pushed off the ringsiders quite quickly, and comes in under the bottom rope within a few seconds. I think the legend that he barely made it back in time was born instantly, because the fight was so dramatic it just had to be, and over the years that has grown into the assertion that he was out for 20 seconds or something.
