Is there any way a boxer can get out of a mandatory?

    I vaguely remember at the very start of Haye's pursuit of Wladimir he said something like "forget about the mandatories"

    So can a boxer escape a mandatory somehow and still retain the belt? Say if there is much greater public demand for a fight against someone who isn't mandatory?

    If so, any examples?

    Depends on the sanctioning body. IBF seem to be more stringent than WBO and certainly WBA and WBC
