I think most on the board will agree that things like multiple governing organisations with so many different titles (the latest one from the WBO - International Welterweight Title - on the line when Pacquiao fights Rios), super champions, diamond champions, interim champions and champions emeritus make the sport look ridiculous and don't do it any favours. Different promoters not allowing their fighters to fight guys that are promoted by another company might make financial sense, but again most would agree stops boxing from being as great as it could be. My questions are, do you think there is any realistic way that the sport can be fixed? What would it take for there to be one global governing body established? Are mergers between the alphabet organisations ever going to be likely? If the situation keeps going the way it is going, will boxing become a backwater sport that cannot appeal to casual and mainstream sports fans in big numbers at all?
Nope. All sports have their problems Boxing was born with problems... I don't think anybody pays attention to these bull**** belts and titles anyway.. even third party ranking are ****. The resume's of the fighters are what matter, Most REAL boxing fans don't buy into hype and understand who the best fighters are anyway and we always get good fights - whether you pay for stupid fights is your own problem.
A boxers' union, like they have in other sports, could assert itself and force those changes. Then each country would have its own organization and they would organize into one worldwide umbrella organization.
That's what I want my government to spend their time on. Instead of dealing with issues in taxes, education, hunger, resources, protection of rights, jobs, inflation, and international relations. I want them to focus on getting rid of those damn alphabet titles.
I personally favor the fighting aspects of boxing as I believe most casual fans do also. So to encourage the offense part of the sport, how about a strict ruling on holding? The scenarios would be if a boxer is hurt they can hold once as a natural instinct to recover, but after the break the only way to buy time to avoid punches is to box or take a knee. It would be up to the referee's judgement that the hold was due to being hurt and should be communicated clearly like a yellow card in soccer.
SLOW DOWN....YOU ARE ASKING FOR TOO MUCH BRO.....START EASY....example: One free cell phone = no need to balance the budget Example: Tighter Govt involvement in private sector = Screw us all over with **** health care atsch :smoke
Back in the 70s there was lots of talk about some level of govt control of boxing and I was dead set against it. Here we are 2013 and now I believe it's the only way boxing could ever be what it was. First thing we have one universal boxing commission. We go back to no more than 8-10 divisions and one champion in each division. Just doing this would eventually revive the sport. No more easy pathways to a title. No more watered down talent pool. It will promote fighters working harder to attain a championship and better fighters in general. The lay sports fan could then understand who the champion was in every division which will promote higher fan interest. I've been involved in the sport for many years and I am fed up with it. If I can't determine the true champion in every division what hope does anyone have?
We need a federal boxing commission. All the promoters should be investigated and everyone should be ranked according to their wins. How many times did Ray Austin become #1? Don King, of course...........
