Is this a CHECK HOOK??? Your input required!

I've always found it annoyingly difficult to find a consistent definition for the check hook. It seems as if everyone has their own idea of what the punch actually is. Floyd didn't explain the mechanics of the punch after the Hatton match, and Emanuel Steward (who named the punch before Floyd's post-fight interview even took place) didn't bother to explain the definition either. As a result, we've had confusion and people name dropping the move all over the place. At this point I'd only really trust the opinion of a trainer.

Can the people who run the 'On the Ropes' show please ask Steward about this punch? He's been on the show before right? If not him, then ask any trainer, because all of this is getting ridiculous.

Boxing is not maths. Widowmaker pretends that there is an absolute definition of a check hook, written down in the True Boxing Knowledge-book. Of course that is not the case :nut

Ask ten different trainers and probably they will give you ten different answers. I would go for "Catch an aggressive opponent with a hook, and get the **** out of the way in the process." That is after all the basic idea of it. Then Wlads hook could be called a check hook. But of course, not all in the world of boxing would agree on it, and I am not the biggest expert on the issue.

But posters on ESB should stop pretending that there is a water proof definition of what is or not is a check hook

I wouldnt count Wladimirs hook against Peter as a check-hook, to be fair. But Wladimir has shown he can throw quite the hook while pivoting and moving his body backwards/sideways, as he did with Ray Mercer.

Wladimir vs. Ray Mercer, even at Mercers advanced age, said Wladimirs a bad cat. That fight proved all angles Wladimir can and will use if he gets the opportunity to do so. Including check hooking and hooking off the jab.
