I just love how all of the check hook "experts" who are saying that Wlad's hook was not a check hook... are the same guys who are using Mayweather's hook against Hatton as their reasoning and example.

As stated before. A textbook check hook is when you throw a hook on the person coming in... WITH YOUR FEET PLANTED... then pivot on your PLANTED left foot... while your right foot swings around and you spin off to the side.

Floyd Mayweather CLEARLY didn't do anything like that either. The point is that you DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT TEXTBOOK IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE A CHECK HOOK. Wlad's was a check hook and so was Mayweathers. They got the same result. Neither used their left foot as a pivot. However, both CHECKED their opponents with their left hook as they aggressively came in... and both got out of the way of the opponents oncoming shot, leaving them swinging at thin air and off balance. That is the desired effect... and exactly what a Check hook is.

Is there a difference between a check hook and beating your opponent to the punch? The idea that Wlad got out of the way of Peters shot isn't true. Wlad landed, and then jumped back. So by your description it isn't one either.

Check hooks are NOT uncommon. However, most people don't know them when they see them.

If people want to say that Wlad's isn't a check hook because he didn't pivot on his left in textbook fashion afterward... fine... we can say that... then we must also say that Mayweather's hook against Hatton was also not a checkhook, because it wasn't textbook either. I don't see what is so hard to understand about that.

    You didn't see Wlad avoid Peter's punch?:think

There is a clear difference. I am not sure you guys are aware. But there is also this thing called blocking, or following up your punch with other shots. The difference in the check hook is that you IMMEDIATELY get the hell out of the way when throwing it. It's a set up. Wlad was clearly already prepared to leap back when he launched his left hook... he was CHECKING Sam Peter as Peter came in swinging aggressively... Then he immediately leaped back out of the way so Peter hit nothing but air, and was left off balance.

You can't see the difference between that and just throwing a hook? Or that and countering with a hook after your opponent already gets his off on you? Or beating your opponent to the punch, then just wading in and blocking or following up with other punches?

The point of a check hook is DEFINITELY to beat your opponent to the punch... then get out of the way of his shot leaving him hanging out to dry. I have already explain the textbook way to move AFTER the punch... however, neither Wlad or Mayweather followed the textbook standard of pivoting to the side on the planted left foot. Howver, also like I stated... both got the desired result of a check hook. Mayweathers was more pronounced as Hatton had left his feet for his own punch, and happened to be heading right into the turnbuckle.

Well officially it was ruled a slip. I don't think it should have been but regardless he wasn't hurt, just lost his balance because he was over stretching for his shot and missed. The punch meant he didn't find his back foot but he bounced up undazed.
