I recently made a comment on a NorthEast boxing mags Facebook page in response to a "best trainer" question.

    This was my opinion.

I was told by one guy that it is an outrage to not have Roach as one of the greatest. I personally would have him top 15 but maybe creeping into top 10.

Do you guys think my list is fair?
Is Roach on the level of these guys yet?
    Where would you rank Roach?

You can't really rate trainers, you don't know how much for sure they improved a boxer. Anyone who gets a Ali, Leonard, Lewis, Wlad, Hearns has got a sure fire winner from the start. Most of the 'great trainers' are just great at latching themselves onto the best talent. DeAmato is different because Tyson and Patterson were built from scratch

Maybe a better way to put it is highest achieving.

I agree everyones opinion on greatest will be different , everyone will have a different way to define it , a different way that it must be achieved and so forth.

I am just looking for a general response to if i was unreasonable with that list as i was told. If the majority think so then i maybe need to reassess my definition of greatness.

I prefer trainers that can mold a champ from nothing. Teachers. Eddie Futch, Ray Arcel, and Cus are good picks for that. I also think Jack Blackburn deserves a mention as well as Bill Gore who molded a young and nervous Willie Pep into one of the greatest boxers of all time. Gore also trained Ezzard Charles and some other champs.
