Has the general perception of the public about boxing been warped by years of less exposure in the mainstream

As a boxing fan i often get pigeonholed as some sort of violence enthusiast.

At Xmas i was bought a film called "fighting" which had CHanning Tatum as lead and basically its just street fighting and is generally a **** film

My Gf's dad flipped on me about taking my gf to boxing matches stating that it always kicks off at boxing and i shouldnt put her in that saituation like it is any different at any large crowd events i dont think she would be safer at any given football match

Is boxing getting a bad press is it hampering our efforts of getting it mainstream again?

My girlfriends dad also gave me a funny look when I told him I liked to smash people in the ring as fast and hard as I could.

He also looked at me funny when I told him that I had ring rust.

    Weird.

honestly dont really let it be known i like boxing and have boxed to anyone outside my close friends.

i was talking to my dad who likes all sport about it and he said something along the line off "its a bit of a rip off £15 and the fight ends after 2 minutes." and "all the wba and that crap you know its not the real thing"

he watched Hatton vs Mayweather and Haye vs Valuev with me, likes Haye says he speaks well for a boxer lol. but thats about it.

my brother used to live in glasgow and my whole family went to visit him bar me, they were all excited about watchign harrison vs williams 1. i dont think they and the other 8million have watched boxing since.
