"Ray Robinson turned down a young boy's asking for an autograph...this young boy was a big fan and felt sad and pissed that he couldn't get the autograph from his idol and swore that he would never turn down any fan who wanted an autograph from him when he became Champion...the young boy's name, Cassius Clay." true story, heard it somewhere before anyone know? Not very classy behavior from the sugar man if true...
It wouldn't surprise me if there were many stories like this involving Robinson, he may have been a great fighter, but he was not a good person.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQWFA7mbZLs[/ame] fantastic documentary. yeah, from most accounts, including his son's, he was a dirtbag. the funniest is hearing basillo talk about him: he had zero respect for him as a person
Funny how the dynamic between LaMatta and Robinson was always of Jake being the villain and Ray certainly the more noble and heroic of the two. Good PR people working behind the scenes there.
was robinson really that much of a douche? ive heard people say he was similar to the way mayweather jr. carries himself, man thats annoying, you feel like they need a good whuppin, at least Ali had class when he acted the way he did...most times, sometimes he took it too far like with Frazier or Louis.
Not quite. Clay went to see Robinson before the olympics and asked him to be his manager, Robinson thinking this kid was just a nobody, blew him off. Ali did say the way he was treated by SRR that day, affected the way he treated fans when he became famous.
No. Boyd is frank, if not detailed, about Robinson's long career of wife beating. He abused his second wife, Edna Mae, so brutally that their son, Ray II, believes it was the cause of her five miscarriages. Summing Robinson up at the end, Boyd allows that "We may be disappointed that he was not of sterling character and was flawed, as we all are," dismissing Robinson's monstrous behavior with a wave of the hand. Boyd's judgment is in keeping with the laziness he shows as a writer throughout the book. If he is not interested in describing Robinson's greatest achievements, why should he be any more diligent in examining his gravest sins? Thats not cool...but do we know what Lamotta did to compare? Im not talking the hollywood film Im talking about real life. Can you really say who was worse?
Yes ,its true . SRR was an arsehle in many ways, beat his Wife regularly and hit his Son,he called Ike Williams UGLY, on the street ,and they nearly got into it . Great, great, fighter, but a very contradictory person,he held up promoters for extra money at the last minute, demanded the lions share of all purses ,leaving his opponents pea nuts, yet gave unstintingly to charities ,and was known as a soft touch on the street. A p4p great but a flawed human being as are we all. Well ,except for M:heyendoz:rofla.
Robinsons private life did not match his boxing greatness..Ray Robinbson BELIEVED he was ROYALTY in his halycon days, and was very haughty in his private life... Conversely the nicest and most dignified champion during and after his career was Floyd Patterson..I would see him in his retirement at the Golden Glove bouts, and fans would treat him with great dignity and affection...I was so fond of Floyd Patterson, the man !!!
