Why don't such fighters just take up another career?
Hold up your gloves and pick off punches from an average contender without taking barely any punishment all night and if you do take a punch lie down and take the count as the crowd cheer for a hype job, all for 2-3K per fight = EASY MONEY
They love boxing, they love to fight, they love training to get themselves into shape or near shape, they love the buzz of fight-night, they love the occasional brushes with boxing-fame, they love the self-respect and discipline it brings to their lives, they love the ring-card girls, they love the little nods they get from the established pro's, they love the little nods they get from their opponent at the end of the round, they love it when the referee calls them "son", they love the comradery at the gym, in the changing room, they love the cheers from the dozen or so friends and relatives that still bother to turn up, they love hearing "whoa" when someone asks what they do and they notice the glazed look their friends receive when they answer the same question, they love the old fighters and comparing themselves to the old fighters like "yeah, that Toney turns his hook over like me", they love the local newspaper articles and people recognising them when they are doing their roadwork, they love it when someone tells them at a wedding that "they're only having one" because they got a "big fight" coming up, they love hearing stories about guys who have stepped in as a last minute substitute and whipped the other guy because, hey, that could be me, they love paid in cash, they love the occasional nights out on an undercard of the club-circuit, they love every sight smell and touch of the ring, and they love telling themselves, every morning, that the big break is just around the corner. And it ****ing beats working at McDonalds, too.
I suspect there were one or two aliases (of Reggie) there. Boxrec will admit themselves, they are a work in progress. The information they provide should be used in context. The fact you made that comment about Reggie, suggests you are not using the information correctly. Fighters like Reggie and Peter Buckley, were god sends to promoters. Who needed fighters who knew what they were doing, would probably take your prospect the distance, and could fill in last minute... Without these type of fighters, boxing would simply not exist.
I had a friend who finished his pro career 11-15. He started his career 0-4, but he loved boxing. He was a security guard by day and worked out in the evening and fought professionally. He was a southpaw with an exciting style, came out in a costume to Michael Jacksons Thriller and loved being in front of the crowds. He would get everyone to come to his fights and would leave the ring on a stretcher or just completely bloodied and battered, but some guys just love it for some reason or another? I could never do it, but theres probably more guys like him then with winning records.
Boxing has always needed 'have gloves-will travel' guys. Always have and always will. Without them the sport is ****ed
This makes me think of Librado Andrade and how he left a job as a fast food restaurant shift manager for boxing.
