Sure it was corrupt but it wasnt the State Commissions doing it in those days & giving boxing fans the finger
I enjoy it. We have some great characters and the trash talk/Promos are entertaining. The heavyweight division is way more exciting than the Klitschko era, the LHW division has got more attention, CW had a undisputed champion and has great competition, middleweight division is still going strong and the lighter weights have got more attention with the likes of Lomachenko and Inoue, even getting good prospects. I think we've had some great fights over this era. Of course there are **** things like unification marinating too long, but that's nothing new. Some weights aren't appealing to casuals but thats always been a given. Super Middleweight isn't as competitive as it once was, don't see any of the champs fighting each other soon. Either than waiting for fights, and juicing... its not a bad era.
No era is best or better, it is what it is to that generation. HW...we have a heavy handed KO artist named Wilder. We have so many young promising fighters, but they aren't American, they are global. We may have lost Spence. Fans, enjoy what U got! Crawford has either dominated everyone or adjusted to dominate. We had a MW who ruled it like Hop & Hagler. They, too were ragged by the menstruating fans of their era for not moving up. WTF4? If one can maintain a certian weight and clean out their divsion...hold down...that is a special fighter. Loma does something historical, fights for a title in fight #2? Hold 3 titles today, that is a house cleaner if there ever was, Inoue burst on the scene...expect for him to be around, win, lose or draw he will continue to deliver. We just saw a 6'1 SMW in David Benavidez walk down Dirrell outbox, then beat him, busted him up & his career is just like Inoue..getting started. AJ, Fury, BIG men who can box, skip all the drama queen fans finding stuff wrong. any era can be prodded poked holes into if a person is truly committed to finding something wrong. @ MW, there are 3 undefeated fighters in the top 10: Andrade, Jermal Charlo & Szerameta... There is a head on collision about to go down in the Jr. Welter with 3 undefeated champs....I'm sure someone is going to unify. There is a changing of the guards going on in the LHW & MW...that's what it was called b4 fulltime complainers became fans. 2day we say old Kovalev, old 3G... thats fine. @ Jr. Light, we got a small thick little tank of a mofo in Davis who likes to fight. No running, bicyclist, track export- he will either unify or move up & face one skilled mofo in Loma...that will be talked about for ages if/when it happens...enjoy the moment. 13 years in Leo Santa Cruz...is the old lion ready to be taken? whoever tries got a fight on their hands- & this era gets to witness; enjoy the moment. The old lion of the pride has to be beaten out, NP for me. One shot for Deontay...and thats a wrap. But as my uncles told me, Tyson was my era of Foreman a menacing puncher with flaws. His uncle told him Foreman was his Liston. A menacing puncher with flaws. Skip how many flaws Deontay has..enjoy the moment of knowing U are living to see a skinny dude put people's lights out. Rarely does a technical boxer have one punch power. Rarely does a KO artist have skills. Can't have it all ways. Enjoy the moment. It's not the best era, but it is an era with great fighters, boxers & same old promoting garbage. Difference is, the old days didnt have instant updates on daily corruption.
Well, it seems to me, at least. I'm definitely not an expert on older eras, though. But now we have so many weight divisions, so many "championship" fights, just a lot of fights in general. But how many of those are good fights?
The era of the fab four was much better, they were faster back then, the nearest fighter to those four is Loma, there will never be another era like that or fights as exciting that are watched by so many people, therre will never be a star as famous and charismatic as Leonard was, Floyd was not famous in Europe he was not a global superstar like Tyson was who took over from the fab four and was better than any heavyweight fighting today, so in that sense most of the 80`s scene was better than todays scene, there isn`t much depth in talent now, Loma and Bud are exceptions to that rule, no disrespect to the stricken Spence, but he wasn`t in their class at all, hope he pulls through though.
Offered $100.000 dollars to take a dive. (2:30 seconds into clip) American baseball, basketball & football started off earnest and gradually became corrupt. Boxing is the only sport that started off corrupt. This content is protected
I think there's a tendency to look, nostalgically, back at the era of The Fab 4, as having been something really special. And it WAS a unique time - with 4 ATGs at around the same weight, in their respective primes (or close to it), willing to fight each other. That one of them (Leonard) was a true media-darling, known the world over, didn't hurt either! "There isn't much depth in talent now". Really? The talent pool is much deeper today (compared to the 80s), and truly international. Maybe not as visible to Americans these days - but so many new countries have taken up pro boxing over the last few decades, and are producing lots of excellent boxer. Just because the majority of the best fighters no longer are Americans, doesn't mean that boxing today sucks, or is at an all-time low (which I know, isn't exactly what you're saying - but which you often hear in a forum like this).
I agree on this, the best near never fight the best in the weights thay are in. Go back in time to be P4P you had to fight the best to get recognition. 2 boxers stand out in P4P & that's. Usyk & Inoue. Loma after them & Pacman for what he's done over the years, all the rest are a joke when P4P is said.
If there are more active boxers today than in the 80s - doesn't that mean, that the talent pool is deeper?
Pretty good era, definitely an improvement over recent past. Some good fights this year so far. I complain but that’s my nature. One good fight and I’m reminded of why this is my favorite sport. The future of boxing is brighter than I suspected a short time ago.
