Tigeredge, I dunno why u have such strong views about the 90s being an era where everyone ducked each other. I think it was like that a bit (but not really as much as you make out) in the early 90s, but Oscar De La Hoya came along and changed all that, and look what was happening all in 1999 (it's just the year I remember best off the top of my head, I'm sure a similar list could be compiled for any other year): Holyfield v Lewis I & II Whitaker v Trinidad De La Hoya v Trinidad De La Hoya v Quartey Ayala v Tapia That is undeniably a crop of big fights for one calendar year. And that doesn't include guys like Mayweather, Mosley, Barrera, Morales, Jones Jr, Hopkins and Hamed who were all active at that time but just maybe didn't have big fights in that particular year of '99. I'm sure a sprawling list could be wrote of huge fights in the 1990s (Whitaker v Chavez, Whitaker v Azumah Nelson, Jones Jr v Hopkins, Jones Jr v Toney, Holyfield v Bowe trilogy, Holyfield v Tyson I&II, Chavez v Taylor, De La Hoya v Whitaker, De La Hoya v Chavez, Camacho v Trinidad, Camacho v Chavez, and so many many more...) so I think u r being a bit harsh on that decade. I wouldn't mind, it's just that I grew up in that era so many of my favourite fighters were around then, and so I think it's a bit unfair and disrespectful to them to keep making that accusation about the times in which they fought, implying they 'ducked' each other.
I'm actually 7. 2007 was great: Mayweather - ODLH (the fight was ****, but before the fight we didn't know how Money would cope with the much bigger ODLH) Pavlik - Taylor I Calzaghe - Kessler .... I don't like rematches, so I didn't anticipate Pavlik - Taylor II as much as their first encounter. Same with Pacquiao-Marquez. Cotto-Margarito should be great but but I'm not a fan of either of these two guys. Abraham-Miranda was my fight of the year so far but only because Abraham is one of my favourite two fighters. Globally the fight means almost nothing.
Well I'm nine so listen to your elders: 2008 doesn't suck. Whether u like rematches or not doesn't really effect the quality of the year. Marquez-Pacquiao II was a great fight. So was Vasquez-Marquez III. Campbell-Diaz was absorbing, as was Dawson-Johnson and Bradley-Witter and Hopkins-Calzaghe. Diaz-Pacquiao was a masterclass. Khan-Gomez & Haye-Maccarinelli were cracking domestic clashes for us Brits. And Casamayor-Katsidis? AMAZING. And it's only August...
well 2007 was on fire but 2000 also featured great fights like barrera-morales,delahoya-mosley,vargas-quartey, and trinidad-vargas.
Well, I'm one of the few box fans who don't see the need for Vasquez-Marquez IV as it will show nothing I haven't seen in their previous fights. Haye-Macca was a great fight for a seven year-old German as well while Khan-Gomez and Bradley-Witter were probably only big fights for the Brits. Diaz-Pacquiao was a masterclass indeed but what did we expect? That Diaz (who struggled against the OLD Morales) would beat Pacquiao? Calzaghe-Hopkins was a big disappointment for me - probably because the old ******* did way better than I had expected (and hoped). --------------- If you like 2008 - fine. I think it's disappointing.
camacho tito and camacho chavez were not superfights. de la hoya v chavez was not a real superfight (though it was money wise). tyson holyfield was not considered a superfight. everybody though that it would be a massacre how wrong they would be) Yes there was some great fights in the 90's but i remember boxing fans were moaning for large periods of that decade about how the best don't seem to fight the best. there were lots of great fights that never happened I remember in early 99 when oscar fought ike and lewis fought holyfield, people were going on and on about the best fighting the best again. 1998 was a horrible year for the sport, the only shining light was gatti v robinson
