    Boxing News (20/2/09 edition):

"Omar Sheika faces childhood role model Roy Jones in Jones' hometown of Pensacola on March 21st. They fight on a pay-per-view show that includes three MMA bouts on the undercard, making it the first time boxing and MMA have combined on a pay-per-view bill."

Will we be seeing more of this type of thing in the coming years?

Good idea or bad idea? / Good for boxing or bad for boxing?

have no interest in mma at all. would find it very hard to stay up for a main event fight at 5am if there was mma on before it. would be bad for boxing imo if this starts happening more

the only way it would be good for boxing is , if it got more people interested in boxing.
the people who like boxing and mma would propably like it. peoople who like mma and dont follow boxing would propably watch the mma and then switch off.

    I don't mind a bit of MMA.

But I really wouldn't want to see promoters mixing the two sports in with one another. I think in the long run it would be bad for business and would put off hardcore fans who are only interested in the boxing.

in america. most people only go to watch the main event. if you look at the undercard fights sometimes the arena is deserted.

also this could be to do with the fact that roy jones is promoting and they were finding it hard to get boxers for the undercard.

interesting that golden recently ran an mma event and i guess its possible they could start mixing boxing and mma.

    ok...here i go again.

this is absolutely terrible..and a sad day for boxing.

mma and boxing should never - ever - be assossiated together.

i have nothing against mma / ufc or their fans....just dont assossiate them with boxing...they are 2 completely different sports.

where will this end...call me mad, but i'll tell you now friends..this will ruin the sport of boxing if allowed to be continued...
in 20 years time you will see 'fighters' competing in both sports...so a boxer will have to train to be adaptable..and be ready to take an mma fight, as and when he is required...therefore, the general skill level in boxing will go down...and pro records will be made up from results from both sports..

i go to see a football tournament, i want to see football...i dont want half the games football and half rugby...just because the pitch is the same size...

if this continues it will ruin this sport...a sport thats in bad shape in a lot of areas already.

    ok...doug out.

The freakshow factor is a bit of a worry.

I think there are certain things that Boxing could borrow from MMA/UFC in regards to the presentation of an event, but I would never want to see the actual sports themselves spliced together on a permanent basis......it would undoubtedly dilute the appeal of both.

It's business, not about morality. MMA is very popular atm.

I'm a big fan of both boxing and MMA and I think they should remain separate. They are totally different sports and as someone said above it would dilute the appeal of both of them.

While I can see the benefits for MMA as a growing sport being exposed to more fight fans, I'm not so sure that it would be a benefit for boxing.

for me...and i speak for myself only..
it's that very statement above that has gotten the sport of boxing into the depths of where it is now..

the 'it's business' attitude has given us -
4 main governing bodies..each with their own world champion..
more up and coming governing bodies...
the wba giving us 2 world champions in a division..
    meaningless titles like 'international'..
evander holyfield being moved from 45 to 12 for no apparent reason so he could qualify for a world title shot...
    tournaments like 'prizefighter'..

and all because of the 'its business' attitude.

it's supposed to be a sport as well as a business...or should be.

i dont expect anyone to agree with any of the above.

    :good
That's pretty much sum's it up, MMA is ok in small dose's or until they go to ground (Can't stand all the rolling around), but it should be separate, it's two different sport's.

However i like the idea with the Bernard Dunne Title fight where there gonna have some Amateur fight's on the undercard, great exposure for the up and coming fighter's and they will get a good look at how the professional shows are run.

This is not the future of boxing (hopefully).

Keep in mind that even though RJJ is fighting this is a smallish promotion. None of the tv networks in America have picked it up and therefore they are having to put it on PPV. If Roy Jones wasn’t headlining this card would meant **** all. Many small time promoters have put on shows with both MMA and boxing bouts but none at the top level

Earlier this year Golden Boy announced a deal with Afflliction to co-promote events with both Boxing/MMA and put them on PPV. They thought there'd be demand to see the top boxers and MMA practitioners on the same card.

However the backlash from fans of both sports was such that the plans were scrapped. Golden Boy then decided that it would help Afflicition but only to promote full MMA shows. No boxing would be involved.

It is however worrying that Golden Boy, who along with Top Rank are the top boxing promoters in the world, wanted to take such a step. Luckily, they came to their sense and realised it would not work.

I personally am not a fan of MMA, I have watched it on a few occasions but it just doesn’t appeal to me. However there is a lot boxing could learn from a promotional aspect from the UFC and other MMA brands.

Just heard from a guy on the General Forum (Thunder - he's one of the decent posters IMO) that Vargas put on a similar mixed card in Vegas on 14th February.

We can all talk about it being on small out-of-the-way cards, but seeping in through the bottom is probably the best way to play this kinda thing. I really hope this **** doesn't spread to bigger cards.
