With the upcoming Cotto-Pacquiao showdown, I got to wondering about the possibility of a new rivalry brewing. Puerto Ricans mainly inhabit the lower weight classes, and so do the Filipino fighters. are there any other great fights between the two nations remotely possible, or on the horizon? which country would emerge the superior at the end of the day?

lets not even get started on the cubans:patsch

You can't really have a rivalry with a country that only has 2 solid fighters.

there ain't no rivalry. we don't have enough fighters to make it one.

you guys are 1-0 vanquishing our champ Gerry. Maybe Pac can even it up.

Pac will be destroyed, dont cry, this is a business it was bound to happen for next time when you have other options you should never select the Puerto Rican as you next opponent, remember that Mosely at 140 was the easiest fight, they could have selected, jokes on them

you're right, it's def a bit premature for this. but i'm sure more quality fighters will come out of the PI in the near future.

how many does PR have at the moment?

PR is a bit weak right now. You got Calderon, Lopez, Cotto, and Santos holding titles. Historically PI can't touch them though and I don't see that changing any time soon.

in the top 5 in their weight class

    Cotto
    Calderon
    Santos
    Juanma
    Cintron
    Quintana
    I think BJ Flores
    Ruiz top 10

the list goes on and on and on and on .......sigh

just remember there are 7,107 islands and 92 million poeple that make up the philippines

PR is just one little island 150 miles long by 35 wide and just under 4 million people so do the math

we have the highest concentration of boxing talent in the world, and it not even close

Historically it's def a no contest. I wouldn't rule out the future though. Even just a single year can bring things that were simply unfathomable. Just look at the fight between Pac v Cotto, I used to laugh at PacD for even mentioning it. We shall see..
